摘要:
The investigators examined the cultural differences and similarities of nurses' attitudes in Africa and in Midwest America. In South Africa, questionnaires were given to the South African English nurses and to the African Zulu nurses who practice in the area of hospital clinical oncology. Also, the attitudes of Midwest American nurses were surveyed by the investigators. The investigators found interesting correlations and trends among the different groups regarding attitudes toward pain, caring for the dying patient, and attitudes toward disease modality. The three groups were questioned as to the nurse's preference of age and sex in caring for the oncology patient, and to the nurse's responses to the family and patients' questions regarding dying, treatment, and patient care. The research was done partly in Africa by an Oncology Head Nurse who is presently the Executive Director of a Community Oncology Research Program in Dayton, Ohio, and a Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist who is presently an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.

摘要:
An investigation of 50 consecutive new patients with ovarian cancer was undertaken to find out how well they understood their diagnosis, management programme and the possible hazards of therapy. The study showed that many patients did not have an adequate understanding of matters despite efforts by staff to inform them. Ways in which this failure might be rectified are suggested.

摘要:
Negative attitudes about the treatment of cancer have been shown to be widespread in the general public, as well as among health care professionals. Several researchers have suggested that these attitudes can be changed by education and exposure to the latest information about oncological care. This study examined attitudes of nurses with varying exposure to the field of oncology: medical/surgical nurses with no oncology experience, inpatient oncology nurses, and student nurses. All nurses were given identical social histories, with the exception that half of the nurses were told the patient was diagnosed as having cancer, while the other half was given a patient diagnosis of coronary heart disease. The results revealed essential agreement between the three nurse groups for the prognosis of the patient. All three groups held a more pessimistic view of the prognosis of the patient with cancer than of the patient with coronary heart disease. The results suggest that education and level of oncological experience alone may not be sufficient to change stereotypical attitudes about cancer.

摘要:
The nursing management of women with Hodgkin's disease presents a unique challenge. As a result of successful treatment and potential cure of Hodgkin's disease, issues regarding long-term quality of life are beginning to emerge. Of particular concern to these women are issues regarding sexual and reproductive health. Since nurses are in a key position to address these concerns, we must prepare ourselves to meet this challenge. Knowledge regarding the effects of treatment on sexuality and reproduction as well as a framework to assess concerns and implement interventions are essential. This is the second part of a two-part series which discusses the sexual and reproductive issues of concern for women with Hodgkin's disease. Part I of this article discussed the impact of treatment upon the sexual health, quality of relationships, fertility, and potential parenting for these women. Part II presents the PLISSIT model of sexual counseling as a framework for nurses to begin the assessment process and implement interventions. A case study is included to illustrate the application of the PLISSIT model in identification of sexual and reproductive issues for concern. A data base and nursing care plans are formulated based on this model. Clinical applications for the nurse and suggestions for research are included.

摘要:
Individuals receiving cancer chemotherapy encounter numerous stressors that stimulate a variety of coping responses and adaptational outcomes. Seeking information about one's diagnosis and treatment is one type of coping response, which was the focus of this nonexperimental study. Thirty-eight subjects receiving outpatient chemotherapy for breast cancer participated in the development of a new instrument to measure information-seeking, the Information Preference Questionnaire (IPQ). An additional 58 subjects were interviewed about their information-seeking practices and asked to complete the IPQ and two standardized instruments selected to measure how well the patient was adapting to the chemotherapy treatment experience. Information-seeking was found to be negatively related to subjects' age and severity of disease. No significant relationships were identified between information-seeking and the adaptational outcome measures of mood states and level of functioning. Subjects most frequently reported receiving verbal information about their disease and treatment from their oncologist, television programs, and the oncology nurse. Reading materials distributed in the oncologist's office, newspapers, and magazines were the sources of written information most often reported. Findings can increase understanding of the role information-seeking plays in adapting to cancer chemotherapy and enhance nurses' efforts to teach patients.

摘要:
Infections are still the major cause of death in the compromised host. Unfortunately, not all are avoidable. There is, however, a wide spectrum of nursing measures available for prevention of such infections. Measures should be tailored to prevent the specific infections that are common to each particular deficit, whether this is due to the patient's underlying disease or to the therapeutic modalities used.
