摘要:
SummaryThis article describes the results of an exploratory study identifying components of family coping during the cancer experience. Forty-one family members of adult cancer patients completed the 30-item Likert-format Family Coping Strategies questionnaire, which was compiled by the researcher as a result of pilot study findings. Items with which the majority of the study respondents strongly agreed and disagreed are listed. A rank-ordering questionnaire entitled Specific Family Needs was also completed by the study responents, which prioritized helpful nursing interventions for family members. Implications for nursing practice are also outlined as a result of study findings.

摘要:
SummaryIn order to determine the need for family education with respect to care for terminally ill cancer patients, 27 advanced cancer patients and 28 family members of advanced cancer patients were interviewed in a structured manner regarding their perception of family educational needs during the patients' preterminal period. Comparison interviews were obtained from 22 patients and family members. Twenty-nine family members of deceased cancer patients chosen by random selection were also interviewed. All patients were no longer recipients of specific anticancer therapy (palliative care only). Fisher's Exact Test was applied to test associations between variables. The only family educational need indicated by at least half of the respondents was the need to learn ambulation skills. However, 81% of the patients and 66% of the family members expressed the need to learn one or more of the following skills: ambulation, bowel management, comfort care, dietary control, pain management, and wound and skin care. Disparity in responses between patients and their corresponding family members was consistently found which may represent a communication problem between the patient and his family. Respondents who had learned the necessary skills by the trial and error method expressed dissatisfaction with the learning method more frequently than did those who had been informally instructed by a health professional. There was no difference in satisfaction with regard to the presence or absence of followup by a health care professional. Responses were not associated with either the location of the interview or the patient's state of debility. However, among the family members of the deceased a significant association (p<0.01) was documented between the need to acquire skills and a retrospective preference for home care. These data support the beliefs that (1) the perceived needs of each patient and his family with respect to patient management skills must be assessed and (2) anticipatory education of the family regarding patient management is likely to support the goal of home care.

摘要:
SummaryThe concept of social support has emerged in recent years as a major psychosocial variable in health-related research. As a concept, social support has not been defined nor measured similarly in studies which have investigated the effect of social support on health outcomes. Major conceptualizations of social support are compared and studies in which some component characteristic of social support has been examined in adjustment to a mastectomy are summarized.

摘要:
SummaryThere are no known means of preventing breast cancer and efforts to control the disease must be directed toward early detection and improved survival. To achieve this end we have developed a BSE educational program for lay audiences conducted by nurse health educators. The program combines didactic lectures, films, and small group workshops to alert participants to the importance and proper performance of BSE. Follow-up of lay participants by means of telephone interviews has shown that women can be motivated and taught to perform BSE efficiently.

摘要:
SummaryStress inoculation techniques were taught to outpatient oncology clinic participants during a pilot project at the University of Florida Shands Teaching Hospital. An intervention model developed for use with this population included instruction in coping skills for a variety of problematic situations, such as fear of needles and prechemotherapy vomiting. The pilot sample consisted of nine cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. An inductive thought-listing measurement procedure was used to assess self-statements relevant to the clinic situation.Prior to treatment, four of these patients were assessed as adjusting well to their clinic experience. The remaining five patients exhibited problematic behaviors, primarily anticipating vomiting. Posttreatment observations indicated that the stress inoculation techniques were beneficial in altering anxiety-related behaviors. Stress inoculation techniques and rationale are discussed. Case examples and suggestions for modification to the model are presented.
