摘要:
SummarySelf-care was identified as a major factor in the rehabilitation of postoperative head and neck patients. A teaching program was therefore devised and implemented to enhance patient education as well as independence in self-management following major head and neck surgery.

摘要:
SummaryIncreased attendance by nurses at Outreach Tumor Conferences sponsored by the New Mexico Cancer Control Program in 1978 signaled a growing need for cancer professional education programs geared toward nurses in communities statewide.A needs assessment was developed in order to determine both the topics which cancer nursing programs should address and the interest among nurses in case-oriented program formats. The questionnaire was sent to 1000 randomly selected nurses in New Mexico. Results were compared for nurses working inside and outside of Bernalillo County. Topics of greatest interest included the psychosocial needs of cancer patients, of their families, and of nurses caring for cancer patients. Topics related to both the uses and complications of cancer chemotherapy were also highly ranked. Nurses statewide expressed an overwhelming interest in a case-oriented in-service Oncology Program for nurses, therapists, and staff providers. In order to test the viability of such a program, “Oncology Nursing Grand Rounds for Nurses, Therapists, and Other Health Professionals” were established at the Bernalillo County Medical Center. The organization, development, and objectives of these rounds are discussed in some detail.

摘要:
SummaryThe impact of learning one relaxation technique, RGI, was assessed as it affected six stress-related variables: anxiety, depression, physical complaints, pulse, blood pressure, and perceived level of tension. Inpatient cancer nurses and home care nurses were randomly assigned to a training group (n= 12) and a waiting list control group (n= 11). Only depression showed a significant improvement in the experimental group. A number of questions were raised regarding the changes observed, the lack of significance found, and the differences noted between and within groups. The most intriguing observation was that poor copers (using Weisman's heirarchy of coping behaviors) showed the greatest improvement.

摘要:
SummaryThe nutritional status of eight allogeneic bone marrow recipients was regularly evaluated for 3 months. All patients received supplemental total parenteral nutrition (TPN) in the acute posttransplant period. The study participants fell into two groups on the basis of their initial nutritional status, their clinical course, and progressive changes in their nutritional parameters. Although all patients experienced alterations in nutritional state; the four patients in Group I maintained more normal levels, while the four patients in Group II experienced greater declines and many complications leading to extended hospitalization or death. Nutritional influences unique to the bone marrow transplant process, but similar in effect to other intensive therapies for cancer, appeared to affect the reliability of the study parameters. Although influenced by the therapy, body weight, arm muscle circumference, triceps skinfold, creatinine-to-height index, and nitrogen balance did indicate an overall nutritional composite. Total parenteral nutrition, in the amount given, appeared to have positive but varying effect on all patients, although it was unable to prevent the observed declines in nutritional status.

摘要:
SummaryRelatively little attention has been given to the effects that cancer and its treatment may have on the meaning of sexuality for the cancer patient and his/her partner. This article discusses how living with cancer can influence sexuality and sexual expression. In addition, guidelines for sexual assessment, interventions to promote sexual health, and alternate ways of expressing physical love are included.
