The Shewhart and CUSUM control chart techniques have found wide application in the manufacturing industries. However, workpiece quality has also been greatly enhanced by rapid and precise individual item measurements and by improvements in automatic dynamic machine control. One consequence is a growing similarity in the control problems faced by the workpiece quality control engineer and his compatriot in the continuous process industries. The purpose of this paper is to exposit a control chart technique that may be of value to both manufacturing and continuous process quality control engineers: the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart. The EWMA has its origins in the early work of econometricians, and although its use in quality control has been recognized, it remains a largely neglected tool. The EWMA chart is easy to plot, easy to interpret, and its control limits are easy to obtain. Further, the EWMA leads naturally to an empirical dynamic control equation.

It is common practice to mathematically transform orre-expressdata (e.g., logs, reciprocals, square roots) to ensure that the assumptions of normal distribution statistics are more closely satisfied. Re-expression is a problem in some instances because the original scale of measurement is not used and the relationship between the response and predictor variables is often not simplified. It is shown that these limitations can be avoided by applying the re-expression function to both the response and the proposed model form and estimating the model parameters by nonlinear least squares techniques. The model form is not altered, the units of the predicted values and uncertainty are those of the original measurement scale, and the modeling assumptions of homogeneous variance and normal distribution of observation errors are satisfied. Several examples are included to illustrate the variety of circumstances in which this procedure can be useful.

The use of sequential uniform residuals is proposed to screen outliers in process control data. The exact distribution theory of these statistics allows a precise control of the number of observations incorrectly rejected when the process is in control and generated by a normal process distribution. It is also shown that the technique given here has attractive inference properties for detecting shifts in the process distribution mean. The power for detecting a mean shift of specified magnitude is given in terms of a noncentral Studenttdistribution function, and it is observed that a central Studenttdistribution gives a good approximation to this power for most cases of interest.

Tables are given for the selection of single sampling plans for variables using three forms of acceptance criteria (σ-method, s-method andR-method) which match the Operating Characteristic performance of MIL-STD-105D plans. These matched plans are easier to use than the MIL-STD-105D scheme and are useful with isolated lots.

A FORTRAN subroutine for locating the minimum of a function is presented. The subroutine uses a simplex design and iterative searching strategy similar to the Nelder-Mead strategy. When the path to the optimum is reasonably straight, the proposed strategy converges with fewer iterations than the Nelder-Mead strategy, particularly with more than four parameters.
