摘要:
It is not uncommon that regression coefficients appear with the sign opposite to the expectations of the researcher. Several causes and cures of this data analyst's nightmare are gathered together in this paper. Among the causes discussed are: range of independent variables is too small, excluding important variables from the model, multicollinearity and computation error. Some original results are presented and literature resultsaresurveyed.

摘要:
Decision rules in acceptance sampling of large lots may be altered when, due to changing economic conditions, the Bayesian incorporation of the new economic pay-offs with the information contained in the sample shows that the expected values provided by the courses of action“accept the lot”and“reject the lot”call for a different action. This paper shows that the required Bayesian decision making process and decision rule necessitated by the new economic conditions can be reduced in complexity and may be expressed in terms of equivalent acceptance sampling plans. Thus, the change in the economic conditions can be stated and analyzed in terms of change in the statistical parameters needed to define an acceptance sampling plan.

摘要:
A procedure for testing an industrial process for control with respect to defects-per-unit is to compare the number of defects observed in each ofksamples with an upper control limit. The control limit is calculated using a multiplier of the standard deviation which may be different than the multiplier three, which is usually used for control charts. Using the variation in the probability of a type I error and power for different values of the multiplier andk, procedures are described to increase the effectiveness of the control chart for number of defects.

摘要:
The purpose of this paper is to show some of the many things one can learn about the adequacy of a proposed experimental plan before any data are collected. These permit one to evaluate whether a suggested design is appropriate and to compare alternative possible designs. The discussion deals with experiments involving controlled variables which are quantitative and which are to be related to the response variable by a least squares regression fit. A recently developed computer program which permits easy implementation of the procedures is indicated. The evaluations are illustrated in detail by a numerical example.

Moment estimators for the parametersKandPare presented, but the procedure for estimatingKinvolves an iterative technique. Prediction intervals for control charting purposes, as well as confidence intervals for the mean, are considered.

BS 5179 is a three-part guide document dealing with final inspection systems, comprehensive inspection systems and comprehensive quality control systems, and is an outgrowth of earlier U. S. military documents such as MIL-Q-9858A and MIL-I-45208A. BS 4891 is a basic guide document covering several areas not discussed in BS 5179. The evolution of BS 5179 is reviewed, unique aspects of BS 4891 highlighted and comparisons made between these documents and several U. S. documents.
