摘要:
Tables for variables acceptance sampling plans for use with small lots are presented. The sampling plans are derived using a decision theoretic approach for which the theory has been previously presented by the authors. Using this approach, which takes into account the lot size, the sample sizes necessary can be substantially smaller than those for more traditional variables sampling plans. The tables pertain to lots from a manufacturing process having a normal distribution and with lot sizes ranging from 10 to 100. Both the case of known process variance and the case of unknown process variance are covered.

摘要:
The bivariate normal distribution function may be expressed as the product of a marginal normal distribution times a conditional distribution. By approximating this conditional distribution, we obtain a simple method for approximating bivariate normal probabilities. When the correlation falls in the interval [–0.5, 0.5], the maximum absolute error in our approximation is always less than 0.0008. The conditional distribution that we approximate is referred to as a‘normal conditioned on a truncated normal’distribution and is related to screening problems.

Graphical procedures for analyzing the results of nested sampling studies are presented and illustrated with examples. It is shown that a standard deviation control chart analysis will detect atypical results and nonhomogeneous variances that can greatly distort the estimated process variance components. The procedure enables the quality engineer to see the sources and magnitude of the variation in the process and to identify any unusual characteristics of the data. This information can provide a basis for improving product quality.

摘要:
The robustness to a single outlier of four methods for estimating the mean is investigated. The methods appear in such officially published and widely used standards as those of the International Organization for Standardization and Japanese Industrial Standards. Using a computer simulation, we compare the bias (the expected difference between the estimate produced and the true value), the variance of the estimates, and the average sample number required, for each of the four methods.
