An EVOP Game is an efficient means of teaching Evolutionary Operation. An in-company training procedure which uses desk-top computer simulation of an actual process is described. The approach should help bridge the gap between learning and on-the-job application.

A procedure has been developed to determine the length of time a metal workpiece must be allowed to cool down to reach a maximum measurement temperature at which dimensional measurements of specified tolerance can be made. Two nomographs facilitate the calculations.

A method is developed for finding the optimum testing sequence for locating a failed component, or subsystem, in a series system. It is assumed that failure probabilities can be assigned on the basis of maintenance and/or other data. The method is developed and illustrated with a numerical example dealing with a three-component system for which failures are exponentially distributed.

A simple plotting device is given which eliminates the need for normal probability paper (for sample sizes up to 30) by enabling a normal distribution to be plotted as a straight line on square-grid graph paper.

The Shewhart control chart for means can be made more sensitive to small changes by adding a pair of warning limits, located inside the action limits, and taking action when a run of a specified number of consecutive means falls between the warning and action lines. Sensitivity is measured by the mean action time (M.A.T.) as function of the shift in the mean of the process. This paper discusses in detail the individual and combined effects upon the level and shape of the M.A.T. functions, of changes in the location of the action and warning limits and the critical run length. Great flexibility in parameter selections yields charts that give much larger M.A.T.'s when the process is in control, yet will detect shifts of certain magnitudes more rapidly than Shewhart charts.

Three rules useful in census and survey data processing to determine whether a coder, typist, or keypuncher is meeting quality standards are presented. Both statistical properties and practical aspects of the rules are discussed. Tables are given which facilitate application.

MIL-STD-105D switches too frequently to tightened and reduced inspection when producers are just meeting the acceptable quality levels (AQL's). The MIL Study Group of the Japanese Standards Association suggests three slight corrective actions. Otherwise, MIL-STD-105D stands intensive scrutiny well.
