The outputs of many manufacturing processes consist of batches which tend to be more homogeneous than the outputs from the process as a whole. Thus the quality of just one batch is not necessarily representative of the long term quality of the process. This paper discusses a two stage plan for obtaining representative samples of the outputs of such manufacturing processes. The two stage plan is both more efficient and more convenient than simple random sampling. The plan entails sampling k of the batches and subsampling m units within each of the sampled batches. Formulas are presented which determine how k and m should be chosen to maximize the sampling precision subject to cost constraints. Several numerical examples illustrate the adverse effect on precision due to sampling from too few batches. In particular it is shown that drawing the entire sample from just one batch leads to very poor precision.

The signal detection theory (SDT) model of observer decision making, developed in sensory psychology, is applied to problems of evaluating industrial quality control inspector performance. The similarity between the SDT model of the inspector and quality control acceptance sampling theory is discussed. Methods of calculating SDT measures of inspector fault detection ability and subjective quality standards are shown, and examples are given to illustrate the usefulness of these measures for diagnosing the causes of unsatisfactory inspector performance.

In Part I tolerancing was discussed in general and statistical tolerancing in particular. Part II focused on general methods for determining the distribution of the response of a mechanism when the component tolerances are given distributions. Here in Part III cognizance is taken of the fact that the case of known distributions for the component tolerances is an idealization of what occurs in practice, i.e., the true tolerance distributions will shift and drift from the ideal ones. The several attacks known to the author which are aimed at being useful in practice are reviewed. While these methods provide insight, none is a panacea and this facet of statistical tolerancing remains troublesome. A delineation of some open problems and some general remarks conclude the paper.

In the past there have been a number of papers in which it has been shown that the AOQL of any Dodge type plan depends heavily on whether or not the assumption of statistical control is imposed on the production process. Through consideration of the continuous sampling plan CSP-1 it will be shown (by comparison with known results) that these AOQLs also depend on the type of sampling done while on partial inspection and on the interaction of the production process with the inspection procedure.

Some twenty-six articles have been published in the“Reviews of Standards and Specifications”since the advent of this section nearly seven years ago. The time is here to review the subject and to chart a possible course for the future. This review is an introduction to a proposed ASQC publication which will present these articles under a single cover in order to make them available to a wider audience. Because there is virtually no limit on what might be brought together under the general subject matter heading if selections from other journals or periodicals were included in the publication, a decision was made to use only the articles which have been published in this section.

A computer program is presented for performing the statistical analysis of data generated from an n×n Latin Square experimental design. In addition to the usual analysis of variance information for testing the significance of the row, column, and treatment main effects, the analysis of variance table includes information for testing the linear and higher order curvilinear components for each main effect. Of further interest and as a supplement to the analysis of variance is the employment of Duncan's New Multiple Range Test for making all pair-wise comparisons among the factor level mean values.
