摘要:
This paper proposes a very simple semi-economic scheme for the design of a control plan using an X̄-chart, that can be applied at the work-shop level. Once the quality control engineer has selected a consumer's risk point on the OC-curve for his desired degree of protection against inferior quality, he can quickly determine by a table provided three control parameters: the sample size, the control limits coefficient, and the sampling interval. Three features may be mentioned: (1.) Although these parameters only minimize the average loss-cost subject to a constraint, the restricted minimum is in general very close to the exact minimum. (2.) The present method has wide practical applications-three models being studied here. (3.) If an exact optimum is sought, the present solution provides a good initial point for a direct search.

摘要:
This paper argues that multivariate statistical analysis of operating data may provide the necessary information and insight needed to adequately control many of the complex industrial processes that do not lend themselves to rigid deterministic feedback control systems.

摘要:
The relationship of analysis of variance to regression is well-known and is usually set forth in terms of the general linear hypothesis model. Presented in this way, an understanding of the consanguinity of the two methods requires a knowledge of statistics at a somewhat advanced level. The bond between the two methods can, however, be explained in much simpler terms, and in a way that makes evident the practical applications of their similarity. This paper shows how to perform analysis of variance by straightforward regression procedures for a variety of models and in a diversity of situations.

摘要:
This paper describes a set of general purpose statistical analysis programs accessed by users at various locations by means of a remote terminal network. The principal objectives which must be satisfied in preparing and documenting computer programs for use by a mass audience are discussed. Techniques used in promoting the use of the library and encouraging new users are described. Comments from readers possessing experience with similar systems are solicited.

摘要:
A Monte Carlo sampling technique was used to determine approximate critical values for the Kruskal and Wallis H-test when three, four or five populations are involved. The critical values obtained can be used instead of the very conservative chi-square approximation.

摘要:
The analysis of variance is a technique for comparing treatment means or for estimating components of variation. The former is called fixed effects analysis of variance and the latter is called randomeffectsanalysis of variance. Many nonstatisticians who use canned analysis-of-variance computer programs do not appreciate this difference and incorrectly perform a fixed effects analysis when a random effects analysis is needed. The same set of data can lead to opposite conclusions, depending on whether a fixed or random effects analysis is appropriate. This article discusses differences in the assumptions, analyses, and inferences for fixed and random effects analysis of variance models. The mixed effects model, which is a combination of the fixed and random effects models, is also briefly described. The main message is that not all analysis of variance models are fixed effects models and that random effects require different treatment from fixed effects. The entire discussion is illustrated by practical examples.

摘要:
This paper describes the development of a standard measure of juror usage in the 94 United States District Courts and explains how this measure is becoming a recognized quality standard through the self-enforcement of many court administrators and judges. The effect of the standard is to cut expenditures by reducing the number of jurors called while ensuring that those called will be effectively utilized. Of all those called to jury duty, the federal courts use only a small percentage, whereas the state and local courts use the great majority. The problem, therefore, is how to get this standard of juror usage recognized and used by the thousands of state and local courts.
