Tables of the power function of theX̄chart are given for each of four sets of detection rules, for each of eleven shifts in the process average, for up to 10 subgroups following the shift, and for subgroup sizes ranging fromn= 2 ton= 100. Also given is a table of Type I error probabilities for each of the four sets of detection rules, for up to 10 successive subgroups.

When times to failure of a unit follow the Weibull distribution, achievement of optimal costs under age replacement is shown to be quite insensitive to the value of the shape parameter. Moreover, it is shown that under condition based replacement considerable improvement on even optimal age replacement costs is possible for any time to failure distribution with increasing failure rate, provided that the unit possesses a measurable prognostic characteristic which predicts the moment of failure within a reasonable margin of error and a sufficient lead time to undertake (preventive) replacement before a failure actually occurs.

Tables based on the Poisson model are presented for the construction of chain sampling plans ChSP-(0,1). It is shown how the tables can be used to construct plans under three different sets of criteria: given the sample size and one point on the operating characteristic (OC) curve, given two points on the OC curve, and given the AOQL and one point on the OC curve. Techniques are also shown for computing the AOQL and values on the OC curve for a known ChSP-(0,1) plan.

In the quality control of reinforcement steel bars and wires, several European standards and surveying authorities require periodic quotation not only of the mean level and the dispersion of the mechanical properties, but also of their“characteristic value”, known in theoretical statistics as the lower limit of a statistical tolerance interval. The characteristic value replaces the minimum value, which is considered to be too haphazard and unscientific in nature.Characteristic values can be directly compared only when periodic judgements are based on a constant number of tests, a condition that has been overlooked in all existing standards. If this number is fixed at 100, the characteristic value and the minimum value appear to fall near each other. In addition, the characteristic value is very sensitive to deviations from a normal distribution.
