Many industrial plants judge the quality of their product by sending samples to laboratories for mechanical, electrical, or chemical tests. Such tests usually involve various instruments, different operators, and frequently more than one laboratory. The question often arises as to how much of the observed variation might be due to variability between instruments, between operators and/or between laboratories, and how much is experimental error. An example is carried through to show how to plan an experiment to check possible sources of variability. Emphasis is placed on the importance of careful planning of such an experiment before collecting the data.

Several methods have previously been suggested for determination of the sample size and acceptance number for attribute sampling plans while sampling without replacement. A method reported by L. J. Stephens is coupled with one by A. Hald to produce integral solutions that do not require maneuvering in tables to perform iterative calculations.

The Beattie continuous sampling plan (CSP), although not devised to deal with a product that is rectifiable, can be used in that situation and possesses certain advantages over other plans. We discuss sampling plans using the average outgoing quality limit (AOQL) criterion and show that the Dodge continuous sampling plans are special cases of the Beattie CSP with non-integer parameters. We also provide a table of some AOQL plans for the Beattie CSP for various sampling fraction values.

Many quality control problems involve the estimation of proportion defective in a lot. The classical methods assume no prior knowledge of the upper bound on proportion defective. This paper addresses the problem of the determination of confidence intervals for proportion defective for cases where an upper bound on the proportion defective can be assumed. The tables presented, developed using a uniform prior on the proportion defective, reflect assumptions of both large lot size, using the binomial distribution, and small lot sizes (N= 25,N= 50,N= 100), using the hypergeometric distribution. These tables give upper Bayesian confidence limits on the proportion defective.

Principal components and factor analysis are two techniques which are finding increasing application to quality engineers who are concerned with processes with more than one response variable. In this, the first of a three-part series, the concept of principal components is introduced. Estimations, significance tests, and residual analysis are presented along with two numerical examples. Parts two and three will be found in succeeding issues.

A problem facing the product development community is the selection of a set of conditions which will result in a product with a desirable combination of properties. This essentially is a problem involving the simultaneous optimization of several response variables (the desirable combination of properties) which depend upon a number of independent variables or sets of conditions. Harrington, among others, has addressed this problem and has presented a desirability function approach. This paper will modify his approach and illustrate how several response variables can be transformed into a desirability function, which can be optimized by univariate techniques. Its usage will be illustrated in the development of a rubber compound for tire treads.

Tables are presented for the construction and evaluation of matched sets of single, double, and multiple sampling plans. They may be used to derive two-point individual plans to meet specified values of fraction defective and probability of acceptance. Procedures and tables are given to relate the scheme performance of MIL-STD-105D to that of an individual sampling plan. The tables extend into the range of low probability of acceptance useful in reliability, safety, and compliance testing.

A computer program is presented which provides minimum sample size single sampling plans that meet prescribed protection levels for both producer and consumer. The program provides sampling plans based on either binomial or Poisson distributions. Use of the program highlights accuracy problems existing with previous minimum sample size methods which employ tabled probabilities to obtain the plans.
