摘要:
A simple procedure for selecting the optimal economic design of anX̄control chart for a single assignable cause system is presented that can be applied at the workshop level. The procedure has the following features: 1) assuming a constant production rate, the loss per item is chosen as the optimality criterion rather than the loss per hour; 2) inspection of the production process everyhhours without preceding sampling inspection is included as an alternative.

摘要:
A modified approach to the computation of control limits forX̄andRcharts is introduced. This procedure consists of replacingX̄with the trimmed mean of the subgroup averages, andR̄with the trimmed mean of the subgroup ranges. Standard tables of control limits may continue to be used, requiring only adjustment by a constant multiplier, which is tabulated. The proposed control chart limits are shown to be less influenced by extreme observations than their classical counterparts, and to lead to tighter limits in the presence of out-of-control observations. These concepts are illustrated by several examples.

Linear structural models are linear relationships between two stochastic (random) variates in which both of the variates are subject to measurement errors. Structural models are common in experimental work, but are typically fit using least squares. In this expository paper maximum likelihood estimators for linear structural models are presented and contrasted with the corresponding least squares estimators. Asymptotic variance formulae for the intercept and slope estimators are given, along with the corresponding expressions for linear functional models.

This paper discusses the effect of measurement errors in both variables when using the simple linear regression model. It is often stated that if the measurement error inxis small, then we can ignore this error and fit the model to data using ordinary least squares. There is some ambiguity in the statistical literature concerning the exact meaning of a small error. For example. Draper and Smith (1981) state that if the measurement error variance inxis small relative to the variability of the truex's, then“errors in thex's can be effectively ignored.”See Montgomery and Peck (1983) for a similar statement. Scheffé(1973) and Mandel (1984) argue for a second criterion, which may be informally summarized that the error inxshould be small relative to (the standard deviation of the observedYabout the line)/(slope of the line). We argue that for calibration experiments, both criteria are useful and important; the former for estimation ofxgivenY, and the latter for the lengths of confidence intervals forxgivenY.

摘要:
Simple approximations which are useful for constructing confidence intervals for the parameters, tolerance limits and confidence limits on reliability, based on maximum likelihood estimators, are studied in this paper. A new approximation for the distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator of the shape parameter is proposed, which works equally well for both complete and censored cases. Small-sample properties of some asymptotic results for the scale parameter, tolerance limits and reliability are also considered. The accuracy of these approximations is studied by comparing them to some existing Monte Carlo simulation results available in the literature.

A simple method for estimating the percent nonconforming product in accepted lots using a zero defect acceptance sampling plan is proposed. The method is illustrated by a recent application involving the manufacture of an electronic component. Generalization to plans that allow one or more nonconforming sampled units for lot acceptance and various other extensions are also discussed.
