This paper traces the major factors in the development of industrial computer control systems to the present time. It then extrapolates this history, as modified by current developments in related fields (particularly large scale integrated electronic circuits), to predict how this development will continue in the near future.The difficulties which developed in early systems due to inadequacies of computer equipment and computer programs combined with overselling by computer control proponents is discussed along with project cautions and operational changes needed to prevent such occurrences in the future.The present status of standardization efforts in both the hardware (computer and related equipment) and in software (computer programming) is outlined. Finally the requirements for the process to computer system, computer to computer, and man to computer interfaces needed to develop the foreseen hierarchical computer systems of the future are detailed for the reader.

Battery capacity is the stored electrical energy in a battery. It is a major characteristic of batteries which cannot be predetermined with certainty, because there is variation between cells and tests of this variable are destructive. However, battery capacity can be estimated from tests of samples. In the case of small lot quantities of expensive batteries, the capacities of batteries and battery packs can be estimated from test results of sample battery cells. Conversely, battery or battery pack capacity requirements can be translated into specifications for tests of sample cells. Capacity test specifications are discussed and developed from the consumer's point of view.

The acceptance control system relates control requirements to product specifications. It also permits consideration of an allowable amount of assignable variation due to causes that cannot be eliminated economically. The acceptance control chart combines the criteria for the acceptance of processes with the elements of control in the Shewhart sense.

A realistic model is an indispensable prerequisite to any meaningful data analysis. Since most common statistical procedures are based on models involving specific assumptions, such as homoscedasticity or absence of certain interactions, it has become current practice to transform the scale of the data in the hope of achieving conformance with these assumptions. It is suggested in this paper that this approach is logically unsatisfactory. The conclusions drawn from a meaningful analysis should be essentially invariant with respect to scale transformations. The model should be flexible enough to allow for a realistic representation of the physical reality underlying the data. Heteroscedasticity should be dealt with by means of statistical weighting, and interactions, rather than being“assumed away,”must be part of the model.The proposed approach is shown to satisfy these requirements and is illustrated in terms of two individual studies. One is an interlaboratory evaluation of a physical test procedure and the other one deals with the within- and between-laboratory precision of a method of chemical analysis.

A smoothed Bayes control procedure has been developed for controlling the output of a production process when the quality characteristic is continuous with a linear shift in its basic level. The procedure uses Bayesian estimation with exponential smoothing for updating the necessary parameter estimates. The application of the procedure to real-life data is illustrated with an example. Applications of the traditional x̄-chart and the cumulative sum control chart to the same data are also illustrated for comparison.
