Part I of this article provides factors for constructing frequently required intervals for a normal population and describes the situations in which each interval is applicable. The specific intervals considered are ones to contain with a high probability 1. All ofkfuture observations, 2. The mean ofkfuture observations, 3. A specified proportion of the population, 4. The population mean, 5. The standard deviation ofkfuture observations, 6. The population standard deviation. It is hoped that this article, by providing a side-by-side comparison of a variety of statistical intervals, will promote the construction of correct intervals.

摘要:
Presented here are new graphical methods for analysis of life data with different failure modes. These methods, which are based on hazard plotting, are applicable to incomplete life data coming from life tests and the field. The methods are illustrated with data on a small electrical appliance. This paper concludes with a presentation of theory underlying these methods and an introduction to the literature on analysis of life data with different failure modes.

摘要:
A quality problem is to assess the performance of a production process with respect to specifications. A solution is obtained by estimating the percent defective and placing confidence limits on the percent defective for each product characteristic. Tables are presented in this paper for determining a point estimate of the percent defective and 90, 95, and 99 percent confidence limits on the percent defective of a characteristic with both upper and lower or single specification limits. On the assumption of normality, only the specification limits, sample size, sample mean and standard deviation are needed to give a solution to the problem.

Tables are provided which give the minimum sample sizes per treatment (or level) for all combinations ofα= 0.5, 0.4, 0.3, 0.25, 0.2, 0.1, 0.05, 0.01 andβ= 0.3, 0.2, 0.1, 0.05, for relative discrimination (Δ/σ) = 1.0(0.5)3.0, and for the number of fixed-effect treatments or factor levelst= 2(1)11, 13, 16, 21, 25, and 31. Relative discrimination is defined as a standardized differenceΔ/σ, whereΔis the amount by which at least two of the treatments differ. Examples are given of experiments for which it is better to fix the Type II error rateβat a small value and allow the Type I error rate to become relatively large.
