When a production process involves the nesting of production units within larger production units, continuous reduction in product variability can be realized through the use of subvessel CUSUM control schemes. Control of the average levels in subvessels gives good control of vessel variability. This paper discusses the design and use of subvessel control in the chemical industry. An analysis of variance of historical process data shows that quality control should be implemented at the subvessel level to obtain the largest reduction in product variability. The example illustrates that an analysis of variance can serve as a Pareto analysis showing where product improvement projects should be carried out. A discussion of the design of a CUSUM scheme for subvessel control illustrates that such CUSUMs will often use different parameter values than CUSUMs used for vessel control. Average Run Length Tables for subvessel CUSUM design are included. These extend tables given previously.

Important steps in developing a quality control procedure are the determination of standards or norms and checking adherence to these standards or norms. In this article, we present a methodology for process control based on multivariate tolerance regions. We study the relationship between theF-test and tolerance regions. An approximation procedure is presented which allows the user to simplify the analysis by making use of a central chi-square variable instead of the exact non-central chi-square variate.

Computer packages have long been available to aid in the analysis of data. Only recently has the value of the computer in the data collection phase been recognized. This recognition has led to a proliferation of programs for the design of experiments. In this paper we review statistical developments that have made access to computing an integral part of experimental planning, describe programs currently available and comment on their utility.
