A previous article [9] described how a small number of subgroups can be used to set statistically sound control limits forX̄- andR-charts. However, if the power of the charts is of paramount importance, and computational considerations are secondary, then it may be worthwhile to replaceR̄by more precise statistical measures of the dispersion of the process. This article considers two such measures, the average subgroup variance and the sample variance, and shows for each how to obtain statistically sound control limits based on a small number of subgroups.

The purpose of this expository paper is to explain the construction of exact truncated sequential tests for the mean of the normal distribution when the standard deviation is known. Exact one-sided and approximate two-sided tests are given. The parameters of the tests are described and the effects of the restrictions, known standard deviation and normality, are examined.

Regression analysis has become a very popular method for analyzing existing plant and research data. The existence of correlations among the independent variables is recognized as a major pitfall in the proper interpretation of such data. This paper outlines the errors in interpretation that may result when specific degrees of correlation exist. The situation is examined for a two-variable case, fitting first and second degree models to data from sources of varying complexity. A computer was used to generate and analyze the data.

Many useful variations of rectifying inspection programs exist. This note provides formulas for calculating the Average Outgoing Quality for nine different ways in which rectifying inspection can be carried out. The sampling conditions assumed are single sampling by attributes with non-destructive testing.

In this last of the present series of articles, procedures are exemplified for the analysis of multivariate data obtained from balanced experimental designs. A test of the hypothesis that the residual covariance matrices are equal for all treatment combinations is also presented.
