摘要:
Independent researchers and practitioners have conclusively shown that inspectors make mistakes, classifying bad items as good and vice versa. This paper mathematically and graphically examines the effects of inspection error on the p chart. The point of view that control limits are based upon a target value, and the point of view that control limits are based upon error prone data, are both considered. Further, a compensating p chart is offered to help provide an OC curve closer to that desired. Also, the OC curve of a p chart under variable error rates is explained and illustrated.

A mathematical model is developed for a quality control system for variables where the decision criteria may call for lot acceptance, lot screening, or lot scrapping. Since application of the quality control system may lead to one of three results, the model is termed three action. Exact and approximate conditions for optimality are developed. Conditions under which the optimum solution leads to one of the more conventional two action models (accept or screen, accept or scrap) are given. Application of the model and development of optimum solutions are illustrated by example.

摘要:
It is important in sensory tests to check the qualifications of the inspectors who judge the quality of products. This paper presents a simple geometrical method for qualification of the inspectors. Some contributions to pattern recognition methodology, especially a Bayesian diagnosis rule for classification of inspectors, are also described and illustrated.

The quality control engineer is often faced with the following problem. An estimate of mean product performance is required at some specified operating condition, e.g., 100°C. Data are available both at 100°C and at other temperatures. In estimating the mean at 100°C, the engineer must decide between (1) using the data at the condition of interest only, i.e., using only the 100°C data, or (2) using a regression line fitted to the entire data to obtain the desired estimate, i.e., obtaining a smoothed estimate. The gain in precision due to smoothing the data by simple linear regression analysis is considered in this article. For three equally spaced and equally replicated test conditions, gains of 42.3 percent and of 8.7 percent are achieved in estimating the mean response at the center condition and at the outside conditions, respectively. These gains are equivalent to increasing the sample size three-fold at the center condition, but only by 23.5 percent at the outside conditions. Curves quantify the results for different sample sizes, replication schemes, spacing of test conditions, and number of conditions. An expression which can be used to assess the gain in a specific situation is given and its use illustrated. The gain from using linear regression analysis in predicting a single future observation is also considered.

摘要:
Acceptance sampling plans indexed by Limiting Quality Levels (LQLs) are derived. These plans are compatible with the structure of MIL-STD-105D. The draft table of LQL indexed plans under discussion by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is also presented. This table, or some slightly modified version of it, will soon become an international standard or a part of a more comprehensive standard.

A computer program is presented which will perform a one-way analysis of means and provide plots of the resulting analysis for variables, fraction defective, or defects data. As a check on homogeneity of variance a standard deviation control chart is provided for occasions when the variables option is used. For applications in which a simple Shewhart chart is appropriate, a control chart option is provided.
