A tutorial presentation of a basic approach to the analysis of designed experiments from the dual viewpoint of a logical explanation to the engineer or scientist, and a more powerful insight to the statistical analyst. Contrast Analysis furnishes regression coefficients for models useful in optimization, simple significance test (t-test) evaluation of the importance of factors, and emphasis on the interpretation of the effects shown. The technique will be illustrated by examples ranging from very small factorials through composite designs.

Youden's two sample diagram is a useful method for certain types of interlaboratory comparisons of test results. Generally, points in the plot fall within an elongated ellipse, the major axis of which makes a 45°angle, approximately, with the x, y axes. Occasionally it happens that the axes are not the bisectors of the coordinate axes. This paper (1) examines more closely the assumptions underlying the Youden diagram and presents a more general method of interpreting it and (2) generalizes the diagram to situations where the two samples do not have the same level and/or the axes of the ellipse definitely do not bisect the coordinate axes.

Simulation as a tool for management is discussed in its most elementary form. A simple problem is discussed, flow charts are shown, and the limitations of manual simulation indicated. A computer simulation flow chart is shown and results indicated.

The propagation of errors in hierarchical systems of calibration or assembly is well known. It is often required to determine the allowable error at each level of assembly or calibration, if the limit on the final error (or tolerance) is specified. A dynamic programming approach is given for allocating errors at each stage. Both deterministic and stochastic cases are considered. A numerical example is given to illustrate the procedure.

The sequential tests of MIL-STD 781-B are based upon the accumulated test hours of a number of test units. The number of test units, however, is not specified and may be varied to suit the testing agency. The problem here is to find the optimum number of units to place on test based upon a hypothetical cost model. The cost of testing is considered to be a composite of those costs which depend upon the number of units employed and of those depending upon the duration of the test facility participation. A cost model of these fixed and variable costs is illustrated for Test Plan I of 781-B under five assumed levels of mean time before failure and for four unit cost-to-facility cost relationships. Tables of the composite costs for the nine other test plans of 781-Bareavailable upon request from the author.

Nelder and Mead [2] have developed a simple, robust direct-search procedure for finding the minimum of a function. It consists of evaluating a function ofnvariables at the (n+ 1) vertices of a general simplex. The simplex is then moved away from the largest function value by replacing the vertex having this value with one located by reflection through the centroid of the other vertices. Extension or contraction is then applied depending on the contours of the response surface. This continues until either the specified number of trials has been used, the function values differ among themselves by less than a specified amount, or the coordinates of the function are changing by less than a specified amount.
