The practice of variable-selection in multiple linear regression is examined both logically and statistically in terms of the major objectives of regression analysis. It is argued that in addition to goodness-of-fit considerations, due attention should be given to determining the domain, in the space of regressors, in which the regression equation can be used as a prediction device. Such a domain has been called the“effective prediction domain”(EPD). It is shown that failure to do so can result in serious misuse of the regression equation, especially when regressors have been omitted.

There is a need to monitor automated instruments used in the routine daily assay of body fluid samples from a clinical laboratory. The usual procedure is to prepare and make use of quality control charts for calibrations using purchased standard body fluids. These calibrations are dispersed within each batch of analytical samples. However, because of nonstandard conditions and other vagaries that occur with this type of measurement, ordinary quality control chart procedures may not be satisfactory. Clifford's scheme using absolute values of successive differences is modified to be effective when a large fraction of such differencesarezero. The modification should be effective in other circumstances where successive zero differencesare aproblem.

Recent developments in quality improvement have emphasized variance reduction and created a need for methods to analyze the cost benefits that result from investments in increased conformance. In this paper we analyze the cost savings that result from a reduction in the process variance in a single-level canning problem. We present an approximation equation that provides a simple linear relationship between the percentage cost reduction and the percentage reduction in standard deviation.

Simulation studies in this paper indicate that the standard large sample confidence intervals applied to censored samples from accelerated life tests tend to be too short for the required confidence level. Alternative confidence limits are derived which are asymptotically equivalent to the standard large sample confidence limits. These new confidence limits are asymmetric for finite-sized samples and produce a more accurate upper confidence limit. If the main point of an investigation is to determine whether the median or percentile lifetime is below a certain value, a one-sided confidence bound can be used and the proposed technique will yield more accurate results.

The imposition of acceptance criteria upon realizations of generalized sampling plans is described and shown to yield a large variety of new attribute acceptance sampling plans. The resulting generalized attribute acceptance sampling plans can be constructed to provide the same Operating Characteristic Curve as that for conventional single sampling plans with lower expected total cost. An example that illustrates this is presented.

Selection problems for normal means (assuming equal variances) and binomial probabilities of successarediscussed. For both caseskdistributions identified by these parameters are considered. The objective is to select, based on a random sample of size n from each of thekdistributions, a subset of size s distributions which contain the f distributions with the largest parameters (called thetbest) wherek>s≥t≥1. Minimum values of the probability of a correct selection are used to quantify the effectiveness of the procedures. Since these probabilities require numerical evaluation, user-friendly interactive computer programs (available upon request) have been prepared. Sample size problems are emphasized.

A FORTRAN program is presented that estimates parameters of the negative binomial distribution from count data using different methods of estimation. The program also computes negative binomial probabilities from the estimated parameters and sums the probabilities within ranges of one to four standard deviations around the mean.
