AbstractThe infrared absorption of crystalline powders and D2O solutions of normal and 84.5 atom %18O‐labelled sodium arsenate as well as normal and 83.3 atom %18O‐labelled sodium permanganate was measured in the 780–980 cm−1region. The ν1and ν3fundamentals of the aqueous As18O43−ion appear at 834(sh) and 866(s) cm−1while the respective As18O43−values are 808 and 822 cm−1These as well as other data are shown to indicate that the water molecules which hydrate this ion are attached to its As atom. AbstractThe conditions of extrusion of a polyethylene‐peroxide mixture in the absence of crosslinking were measured in a Brabender Plastograph. Tubing was formed in a system consisting of an extruder and a crosslinking oven, the latter vertical and directly above the extruder die, pointed upwards. The use of this geometry solved the problem of the intrinsic weight of the tubing. In the present case, the weight acts on a point above the crosslinking oven, where crosslinking to the final value takes place. The weight of the tubing is a problem when working horizontally, in which case special supports are needed, or when working vertically downwards. The main difficulties with the process as described are during startup, but these can be overcome by following a controlled series of temperature changes in the crosslinking oven until steady state is reached. At this point, the oven is isothermal for its entire length, at a temperature of 200°C. AbstractThe combined use of the method of Medium Exchange and a platinum electrode covered by a thin mercury film significantly extends the range of applications of anodic stripping volt‐ammetry. AbstractA second mixed valence compound of vanadium was obtained by decomposition of vanadyl (IV)bis (acetylacetonate) by fluoride ions in a nonpolar solvent. The compound has the formula [(C2H5)4N]4[V10O26F2H2] i.e. two oxygens of the previous compound [(C2H5)4N]4[V10O28H4] were replaced by fluoride ions. The thermal stability, electronic and ESR spectra are described. The properties of this compound are very similar to the compound obtained by addition of a halide ion (chloride, bromide or iodide) to vanadyl(IV) bis (acetylacetonate) in the presence of another metal complex. The mechanism of formation of these compounds is discussed.

AbstractThe light absorption spectra of americium(III) in ethanolic and concentrated aqueous lithium chloride solutions, and in long‐chain alkylammonium chloride solutions in aromatic diluents were obtained, as well as those of certain solid double salts and complexes. A strong 5f6→ 5f56d1transition was observed in the aqueous solutions at 235 nm (42,500 cm−1), and from the dependence of the intensity of this and the 503 nm (19,880 cm−1) band, on the effective chloride activity, the stability constants of the inner sphere complexes: AmCl2+, logβ1*= −2.21± 0.08, and AmCl2+, log β2*= −4.70 ± 0.08, were determined. The spectrum of the long‐chain amine extracts is comparable to that of solids of the composition AmCl3· 2N(C4H9)4Cl · × LiCl, and the nature of the extracts and of this and similar

AbstractMolecular weights of uranyl nitrate and thorium nitrate solutions in TBP were determined using vapor pressure osmometry. The results seem to show that in carbon tetrachloride uranyl nitrate forms a di‐solvate only, whereas in acetone solution this complex is partly dissociated. Abstract1‐Acetylcyclohexene undergoes photoaddition with ethanol to give, initially, cis‐ and trans‐2‐ethoxy‐1‐acetylcyclohexane. The thermodynamically less stable cis isomer is the major product. No products resulting from photochemical hydrogen atom abstraction from ethanol by photoexcited ketone were observed in contrast to the results obtained with an acetylcyclopentene derivative. The initially formed adducts undergo a further photochemical reaction, intramolecular hydrogen atom abstraction, to give derivatives of octahydrobenzofuran.
