AbstractChanges in the absorption spectrum due to different gegen‐cations of colored cation‐exchange membranes were found and explained by direct interaction between the gegen‐ion and conjugated double‐bond chains in the matrix of the membranes. The decoloration of these membranes as a result of current transfer through them was determined. AbstractA direct spectrochemical method for the determination of beryllium in biological samples is described. Charred samples are mixed with dilute HCl and used directly for excitation by the rotating‐disc spark technique. Chemical separation of Be is eliminated, simplifying the estimation and increasing the speed at which the analysis can be performed. The limit of detection is 1 ppb of Be in urine samples, 20 ppb in lung and other tissues. The coefficient of variation ranges from 15% to 25%. This precision is sufficient when the determination is intended for rapid diagnostic purpose

AbstractChloride, bromide, nitrate, perchlorate, bisulfate, tetrachloro‐ and tetra‐bromo ferrate salts of a number of normal long‐chain (eight or more carbon atoms per chain) aliphatic primary, secondary and tertiary amines were prepared in solid crystalline form and their infrared spectra recorded at 25°C as mulls in Nujol and as KBr pellets. Hydrogen bonding in all these salts was shown to exist by the shift of the N‐H stretching frequency. With a common proton donor the magnitude of Δvwas found to vary with the nature of the anion. A closely linear relationship between Δvand the ionic radii and the proton affinity of the anions has been observed. From this relationship the ionic radii of FeCl4−and FeBr4−have been estimated. AbstractAcridine, quinoline and isoquinoline are shown to form 1:1 charge transfer complexes with their protonated or methylated positively charged forms. The complexes exhibit characteristic charge‐transfer bands, part of which fall in the region where the components of the complex show no light absorption. The association constant K for mixtures containing acridine, quinoline or isoquinoline and their hydrochlorides or methochlorides in methanol‐water was derived from changes in intensity of the apparent charge‐transfer band with concentration of the free base. For the above mixtures in water, the association constant as well as the heat of complex formation ΔH were derived. The values of K and ΔH for the complexes formed between each of the three bases and their protonated forms are considerably higher than the analogous values for the complex with the methylated form, presumably due to a hydrogen bond between the coupled base mo
