AbstractUsing pulse radiolysis techniques, the binding of penicillin and cephalosporin drugs to proteins (bovine serum albumin and lysozyme) has been studied using rate constants obtained for reactions with solvated electrons as a monitor of the binding. The results obtained are discussed in terms of three distinct types of binding.

AbstractThe rate of proton transfer in ammonia solutions containing water and hydroxide ion was determined as a function of temperature and concentration by means of PMR spectroscopy. AbstractA Raman spectroscopic investigation has been carried out on the dehydration products of solid magnesium nitrate hexahydrate. Results are presented for the hexahydrate, dihydrate and anhydrous forms of magnesium nitrate. AbstractChanges in the color of Na, Ca, and Cu‐bentonite‐benzidine pastes were observed for color changes upon freezing at −5°C, −15°C, and −21°C. At −5°C no color change could be detected. At −15°C and −21°C, when the benzidine/bentonite ratio (W/W) was in the range of approximately 0.0003 to 0.003, the pastes' colors changed from blue or pale blue to green or bluish green. Reflectance measurements of Na‐bentonite‐benzedine paste at −150°C were carried out in a specially designed cell. These measurements show that in addition to the color change, the reflectivity of the frozen paste became higher upon freezing to −150°C, presumably because of the formation of ice crystals. AbstractA number of addition reactions to diphenylmethylenecyclopropane (II) have been studied. Bromination and CF3COOH addition in CH3Cl2proceeded with ring‐opening and gave the homoallylic adducts III and VI. AbstractMature human blood cells depleted of ATPin vitroby preincubation with fluoride, maintain the ability to incorporate glycine into their GSH, presumably by exchange. The incorporation of labelled glycine into GSH, of ATP depleted blood cells, in the presence of added phosphate, is higher than in the nonpoisoned cells. Arsenate accelerates the incorporation of labelled glycine into GSH of ATP depleted blood cells. The inhibitory effect of glucose on the incorporation of labelled glycine into blood cell GSH is thought to be related to the binding of inorganic phosphate. Synthesis of GSH in mature blood cellsin vitrowas established with labelled cystein and cystine.
