摘要:
Readers will be aware that in last August's issue of this journal, Alan Dyson wrote, somewhat provocatively, about the future roles of special educational needs coordinators. This provoked many comments, including a response from Norman Butt and Gordon Malone in our last issue. The debate shows no sign of subsiding. Here Dyson elaborates and refines previous arguments. He goes to the heart of the matter, he asks special needs teachers to compare their present role with that of his model and he provides a step‐by‐step guide for this re‐examination. Those with developing roles are invited to contact him at the School of Education, St Thomas' Street, Newcastle‐upon‐Tyne NE1 7RU in order to share e

摘要:
In the headlong rush towards mainstreaming the needs of the ‘customer’ have largely been ignored. Trevor Payne sets out to correct this imbalance. His research, albeit small scale, indicates that those on the receiving end are far from dissatisfied with short‐term withdrawal methods. He argues that integration is mainly an adult perspective. Some readers will be comforted by this, others will no doubt point out the limits of such an investigation. Others, yet again, will maintain that it simply confirms that no two pupils are ever the same and that, similarly, there is no one route to salv

摘要:
In the strange world of special educational needs terms are used in a variety of bewildering ways. They serve their day but stubbornly refuse to die. With the possible exception of ‘backward’ none have proved so durable as ‘slow learner’. Here Christopher Dyer traces the origin of the term and its effect on attitudes and provision. He maintains that the derogatory effects of ‘slow’ linger on and argues for a positive handicapping strategy to right a

摘要:
Although personal construct theory has been around some time its application in schools has been limited. John Ashley explains its origins and current use in dealing with behavioural problems. He uses a case study to illustrate his argument and offers some thoughts on how staff may be trained in its use. It is interesting that this comes at a time when behaviourist approaches are increasingly under attack. The reader will recall the article by Paul Cooper and Graham Upton in our last issue which took a similar stance. The range of strategies for dealing with behavioural difficulties is broader than many think.

摘要:
David Thomas is concerned about what he sees as a decline in in‐service provision for teachers in the field of special educational need. He queries the over‐structuring of learning experiences in schools that hinders progress towards the broader aims of education and encourages the narrower objectives of teaching. He sees a clear parallel in the training and education of teachers where the thrust is increasingly towards ‘the specified objective and technicist role’. The trend facilitates the production of reactive rather than reflective teachers. His concern with the demise of the substantial full‐time courses will be shared by many in the p

摘要:
As usual, we are delighted to publish accounts of developments overseas. We feel this article, on South Africa, will be of particular interest to our readers. Lena Green is an educational psychologist and experienced teacher‐trainer and in an excellent position to comment on the changes taking place in her country at this present, turbulent time. Her contrast in the provision for white and black pupils is particularly illuminating. As South Africa moves relentlessly towards dramatic constitutional change education inevitably will rise up the political agenda. Lena demonstrates the problems but also the opportunitie
