AbstractThe evaluation of the data obtained during the behaviour tests always leads to the problem of multiple correlation, very often with non‐linear dependencies on the target. All mathematical and statistical procedures that have been used so far are based on the assumption of an equation for the desired correlation for which parameters and related statistical equivalents are determined eventually. The MODAK system applied here (MODAK = algorithms of modelling for the calculation of multi‐dimensional non‐linear mathematical models) breaks down a complex correlation into individual dependencies in a mathematical and statistical way and selects suitable equations for each of them independently and determines the corresponding parameters. The numerical example evaluates data of behaviour tests on rats.First results obtained on the correlations of various behaviour tests indicate both the possibility of selecting suitable tests independent of each other and a better interpretation of the observed patterns of behaviour taking into account the interrelations between the tests.In addition, MODAK is a method which can be applied as a matter of course in a general way to all cases which call for the reduction and analysis of data occurring in process and system analysis and in the evaluation of test results requiring statistical modelling. AbstractThis paper presents an extended threshold model for analyzing ordered categorical data. The model admits interactions between the position of the thresholds and the levels of the effective factors. These interactions are described according to the approach of Milliken and Graybill (1970). Especially important for practical application is the special assumption that there is a linear relation between interactions and thresholds, and that the slopes of the concerning regression lines may be different for samples. This means that the latent variables are distributed according to the same type of distributions, but may have different expectations and variances.Underlying this submodel, the estimation of parameters and the testing of hypotheses according to the maximum likelihood method is described. The procedure is illustrated by a numerical example, and an outline is given about a cluster analysis using model parameters.

AbstractWhen height growth curves are linearized, these lines are nearly concurrent after the growth spurt (Masuyama, 1979, 1982b, 1983), i.e. there exists a nearly fixed point, which seems to correspond to the upper limit of the growth of the mean person. AbstractThis paper is concerned with a class of population growth processes in discrete time; the simple epidemic process is considered as a specific example. A Markov chain model is constructed and standard Markov methods are used to study the main biological concepts. A simple and explicit formula is obtained for the transient distribution of the population size. Then, the cost of the process is defined and the joint probability generating function of its components is derived. Finally, the results are extended to the case where the inter‐transition periods are bounded i.i.d. random variable

AbstractIn this paper Bayesian approach is adopted to develop inferences about parameters in proportional odds models. Bayesian posterior intervals for coefficients in proportional odds models are derived by using approximation given in Pregibon (1981). The results are illustrated by using the lung cancer survival data reported by Prentice (1973).

AbstractThis paper outlines methods of determining sample size for epidemiologic research in studies of the etiologic fraction. The basic model with a dichotomous disease and a single dichotomous exposure factor is considered. To determine sample size, the researcher must specify: the magnitude of the etiologic fraction ε to be detected as statistically significant, the level of significance α, the power 1 ‐ β of the test,pthe proportion of the population exposed to the risk factor andRthe proportion of the population with the disease. Sample size formulas and tables are presented for the case‐control, cohort and cross‐sectional designs. Optimal allocation considerations are examined to minimize cost for a specified power. Extensive use is made of Walter's results concerning the asymptotic variance of the maximum likelihood estimator of the etiologic fraction for the three epidemiologic study
