AbstractThe mixed model for complex segregation analysis of quantitative data from three‐generational nuclear families is extended to the multivariate case. Likelihood functions for hypothesis testing are derived for two types of conditional analysis of multiple traits: first when entry to the study depends on the index case's values of all the quantitative traits that are of interest, and second when entry depends on only one trait, but other correlated traits are to be studied simultaneously. Using direct products of covariance matrices, these functions are seen to be direct multivariate equivalence of the univariate function

AbstractThis paper illustrates two advantages of using canonical correlation as a tool in the discriminant problem, with more than two populations, rather than the more familiar Anderson discriminant function. These advantages are: i) simultaneous test of significance as to whether the means of the populations differ and ii) given that the means differ, a graphic tool to illustrate the nature of the difference between the populations. If there are natural groupings of the populations, an analytic technique is also available to augment i). This latter property is also demonstrated in the accompanying application.

AbstractIn this paper two approaches to multivariate linear calibration in linear models are compared. One of these approaches is based on knowledge of the distribution of the variable to be predicted. The other one uses only information about the measurement instrument. The methods are compared with respect to risk function and their functional relationship is analysed. When concerns risk functions we concentrate on asymptotic results.

AbstractWhen there is no prior knowledge on the parameter vector β of the linear model then the LSE is most favourable at least in the class of linear unbiased estimators. On the other hand, in many practical problems one has some guessed estimate of β. AbstractEmpirical regression is defined as conditional expected value based on an estimation of a twodimensional density. It is a modelfree mathematical means for a first evaluation of measured data of an unknown stochastical relation between two quantities. The numerical procedures may be applied for calculation of the mean course of an unknown relation hidden in the measured data. Disregarding the statistical background an other aspect of application is the analyzing of time series, especially smoothing of time series and modelfree recording of the trend component in non‐stationary time series. The calculated regression curve provides an objective basis for comparing of different measured courses as well as for a further evaluation, e. g. in respect of a suitable choice of an analytical expression. The possibility of interpolation and the smoothing properties of empirical regression give essential advantages for internal regression as one step in the process of model constructio

AbstractIn this paper we shall consider the problem of judging how good an actual compromise allocation is compared to Neyman's optimum allocation for the case of stratified random sampling by obtaining a bound to the ratio of the corresponding variances. A solution to a more general version of the problem considered by COCHRAN(1977) and RAO(1983) has been obtained and the results have been empirically demonstrated.

AbstractThis paper presents modern statistical methods used for quantitative genetics and plant breeding. It contains biometrioal analysis principles of fixed model for an identical, incomplete diallel cross series. The theory of vector space is used for estimation of parameters assumed in the model and for performance of the analysis of variance. As a result, the estimation of all groups of parameters treated in the model, is independent. Theoretical results are illustrated by numerical examples from winter wheat breeding.
