摘要:
AbstractEDWARDS'S test for seasonality is extended to multiple peaks and troughs. It is shown how the extended statistic may be adjusted for the population at risk and for unequal lengths of time intervals in the cycle of seasons. A simulation study shows that the extended test statistic is, for sample sizesN≧ 100, very specific in detecting the number of peaks and troughs for which it is intended. The associated method of parameter estimation is also assessed; forN≦ 100, the amplitude of a possibly adequate simple harmonic model is estimated well, but the initial value of the phase angle is not. Estimated percentage points for the extended test statistic are tabulated, and some recommendations are offered regarding usage of this met

摘要:
AbstractIntraclass tau correlations and a corresponding asymptotic permutation test have already been derived by WHITFIELD (1949), though for continuous data only. WHITFIELD'S concepts are now generalized for use with tied and censored data and a suggestion is made for the application of the methods to arbitrary and varying group sizes. Special attention is given to their application to dichotomous data. Extensive simulations confirming the safe use of the asymptotic test even for samples of moderate size are reported and calculated examples with data from twin‐births and kidney transplantations presente

摘要:
AbstractThe estimator ř0(x) of the regressionr(x) = E (Y| × =x) from measured points (xi, yi),i= 1(1)n, of a continuous two‐dimensional random variable (X, Y) with unknown continuous density functionf(x, y) and with moments up to the second order can be made with the help of a density estimation f̌0(x, y) (see e.g. SCHMERLING and PEIL, 1980). Here f̌0(x, y) still contains free parameters (so‐called band‐width‐parameters), the values of which have to be optimally fixed in the concrete case. This fixing can be done by using a modification of the maximum‐likelihood principle including jackknife techniques. The parameter values can be also found from the estimators forr(x). Here the cross‐validation principle can be applied. Some numerical aspects of these possibilities for optimally fixing the bandwidth‐parameter are discussed by means of examples. If ř0(x) is used as a smoothing operator for time series the optimal choice of the parameter values is dependent on the purpose of application of the smoothed time series. The fixing will then be done by considering the so‐called filter‐ch

摘要:
AbstractA series of papers by FIELLER, PEARSONet al.(1957, 1961, 1962) were concerned with the use of FISHER'Stanh−1transformation (=z) for SPEARMAN'S ‘rho’ and KENDALL'S ‘tau’ rank correlation coefficients. Under the assumption of bivariate normal samples, empirical results on the means and variances forzwere obtained. This paper presents results on theztransformation for small samples under a more general trivariate normal model, and reviews the accuracy of the variance and covariance approximations forz, as well as considerations on the resulting power of the tests using thez‐tra

摘要:
AbstractLet categorical data coming from a control group and (r‐ 1) treated groups be given in anr×ccontingency table. A simultaneous test procedure of the (r‐ 1) hypotheses that the probabilities of allccategories do not differ between thei‐th treated group and the control is derived. For small tables and small cell frequencies it is exactly performed by generation of all tables having the given marginal sums. If 2 categories or 2 groups only are given the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic is known; otherwise its distribution may be simulated if the computational expenditure of performing an exact test is too large. By means of a Monte Carlo study it is shown that this method meets its level more reliably and that it has a better power than

摘要:
AbstractRandomization analyses have been developed for testing main effects and interactions in standard experimental designs. However, exact multiple comparisons procedures for these randomization analyses have received little attention. This article proposes a general procedure for constructing simultaneous randomization tests that have prescribed type I error rates. An application of the procedure does provide for multiple comparisons in the randomization analyses of designed experiments. This application is made to data collected in a biopharmaceutical experiment.
