SummaryWe compared the technique of immunofluorescence on clinical samples (IFCS) and immunofluorescence on centrifuged cell cultures (IFCC) for the detection of respiratory viruses, using monoclonal antibodies.Four hundred fourty five nasopharyngeal aspirates were tested prospectively for RSV, influenza-(A and B), parainfluenza viruses (1, 2, 3) and adenovirus. IFCS and IFCC detected 94% and 51% of RSV respectively, 78.5% and 82% of influenza viruses, 8.3% and 100% of parainfluenzaviruses and 0 and 100% of adenoviruses.We conclude that for routine rapid virus diagnosis the IFCS procedure is acceptable for RSV, that for influenza virus the IFCC procedure can be omitted for samples positive by IFCS, and that for the detection of parainfluenza and adenoviruses the IFCS procedure is too insensitive.

SummaryCystic fibrosis (CF) is one of the most frequent recessive disorders among Caucasians. DNA analysis is perfonned by linkage analysis with DNA markers tightly linked to the CF gene. Cloning and sequencing of the cystic fibrosis gene, however, revealed ti.lat the major disease mutation is a phenylalanine deletion at amino acid position 508 of the mature protein (dF508). These recent discoveries open great perspectives for the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis and for the detection of carriers in the nonnal population.In the present study we have used the polymerase chain reaction to detect the dF508 mutation. This mutation was present on 80.3% of the CF chromosomes in the Belgian population. Twenty-three of 740 nonnal individuals (3, I %) were heterozygous carriers. Therefore, the frequencyofheterozygous carriers in the Belgian population is estimated to be about 3, 9 % or I in every 26 individuals.

SummaryThis review focuses on the fact that, for aldosterone to play its role as a regulator of blood volume through its sodium-retaining action, chloride must be retained as well. In fact, amphibian skin reacts to this hormone in terms of chloride conductance as well as active transepithelial sodium transport, both of which increase. The ions move along distinct transepithelial pathways, the principal cells being involved in sodium transport, and mitochondria-rich cells in chloride movement. In this context, it is relevant to emphasize that the collecting duct of mammalian nephron is also heterogeneous in terms of cell types.

We report the case of a 23-year-old woman admitted for a haemoperitoneum secondary to the rupture of an ovarian endometrioid cyst. Preoperative investigations revealed the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia of M3 type complicated by severe thrombocytopenia. The patient eventually died of intracerebral haemorrhage.The rarety of acute abdomen by bleeding as the first sign of acute leukaemia is emphasized.

SummaryA 40-year-old patient presented with intractable headache, panhypopituitarism and diabetes insipidus 5 months after a severe shock syndrome. The magnetic resonance imaging of the brain confirmed a hemorragic necrosis of the pituitary gland. On follow-up, the patient recovered a normal pituitary function, except for the persistence of a partial ACTH deficiency. The pituitary image also normalized. Pituitary apoplexy is a rare disease of severe prognosis due to its neurological and endocrine consequences. It can now be more easily recognized by the new imaging techniques.

SummaryThis paper describes a patient with massive eosinophilic ascites as presenting manifestation probably due to idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome. Eosinophilic ascites and stomach wall involvement were the first detected abnormalities. The subsequent course was characterised by interstitial pulmonary disease and pleural and pericardial effusion. Grand mal epilepsy and numbness of the left arm indicated central nervous system involvement. Treatment with corticosteroids resulted in complete remission.The differential diagnosis of eosinophilic gastroenteritis and idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome is discussed.

SummaryA 33-year-old woman, who at 29 underwent mastectomy for a localised breast cancer (T1NOMO), presented a relapse shown by a rapid rise in seric level of CEA. The classical complete work-up was negative. The location of the relapse was demonstrated by anti CEA immunoscintigraphy. Radiotherapy, hormonotherapy and chemotherapy allowed to achieve a complete remission with normalization of CEA level and of immunoscintigraphy.
