SummaryAn IgG specific enzyme linked inmmunosorbent assay and a complement fixation test were used in parallel to detect cytomegalovirus antibody in 1564 individuals, 1 to 95 years old, living in Belgium. With the first test, about 50 % of antibody carriers were found, but many serum specimens reacting in the enzymatic assay were negative in the complement fixation test. This was the case in 24.3 % of the male blood donors, 57.4 % of the patients with respiratory or flu-like disease and 83.7 % of the patients in acute episode of their chronic bronchitis. Most specimens from the rest of the healthy antibody carriersi.e.women after delivery, medical personnel and female blood donors, reacted in both tests. Specimens from 0.64 % complement fixation positives proved enzymatic assay negative.The results of the enzymatic assays were used to study the age-related acquisition of cytomegalovirus antibody. In order to detect differences according to the geographic origin, the investigated population was divided from the patronymics into belgians and non-belgians. More than 90 % of the latter group were mediterranean, mostly italian immigrants. There were about 45 % antibody carriers in the whole investigated belgian subpopulation and 70 % in the non-belgian. Graphic analysis of the results shows that in both subpopulations there is an increase of antibody carriers as the investigated sample includes older and older individuals. In both cases, when the age-group cumulative numbers of antibody carriers are plotted against the age-group cumulative number of investigated individuals, this increase follows a parabola, indicating a constant age-related acceleration of antibody acquisition. This acceleration is 6.6 times as high in the nonbelgian subpopulation as in the belgian. It is suggested that the high acceleration in the non-belgian subpopulation is related to a high proportion of cytomegalovirus excreting mothers and that both curves can be extrapolated to zero point, indicating that infants would be very rarely infected before birth.

SummaryThe goal of this retrospective study is to compare the results of 25 operated cases of bronchial carcinoid adenoma with those published in the literature. If the epidemiological, clinical, laboratory and follow-up results are comparable, our study identifies two unusual aspects of the radiological findings (volume doubling time, cupula sign).In addition, our results confirm the difficulty of a pre-operative anatomopathological diagnosis of the carcinoid tumour, as well as the mediocre contribution of the percutaneous needle aspiration biopsy in peripheral cases.In view of the relatively high number of falsepositive diagnoses of anaplastic small-cell carcinoma in our series, the possibility of an exploratory thoracotomy must be considered.

SummaryCompared to white normal males without family history of hypertension (n = 43) red blood cells of white, normal males with such a history (n = 17) have a higher (p<0.01) intracellular sodium concentration (8.07±0.30 mmol/1 cells versus 7.33±0.17 mmol/1 cells). This could be at least partly due to their lower (p<0.001) furosemide-sensitive sodium efflux rate (250±19 /umol/l cells/h versus 424±23,1/mol/l cells/h). Also their ouabainresistant86Rb-uptake (0.81±0.06 /imol/1 cells/h versus 0.97±0.03 /imol/1 cells/h) was lower (p<0.05). The potassium concentration in the red blood cells was similar in both groups.Compared to white males without family history of hypertension (n = 43) red cells of black males without such a history (n = 12) have also a higher (p<0.001) intracellular sodium concentration (13.42±1.7 mmol/1 cells). This could result from their lower (p<0.001) furosemide sensitive sodium efflux and their lower Na K+-ATPase activity, as estimated from the ouabain-sensitive86Rbuptake.Our results indicate that the intra-erythrocyte Na+concentration and transmembrane Na, K+-cotransport activity and Na+, K+-ATPase activity are different according to race and family background of hypertension.

SummaryWe report the case of a 65-year-old woman with highly symptomatic orthostatic hypotension associated with primary hypothyroidism. This orthostatic hypotension was caused by an autonomic dysfunction with a loss of integrity of the baroreceptor reflex arc and proved to be quite reversible with thyroid hormone replacement. We are unaware of such a clinical feature of hypothyroid autonomic neuropathy and suggest that hypothyroidism should be considered as an additional cause of orthostatic hypotension.
