To determine the characteristics, complications, and post operative contraceptive acceptance among patients undergoing abortion in Asia, the data on 5, 951 patients from nine Asian centers were analyzed. Patients with pre‐existing medical conditions (PEMC), most of whom had incomplete or inevitable abortions, were analyzed separately from patients artificially aborted and having no pre‐existing medical conditions (NPEMC). Most of the patients with NPEMC were married, multiparous, of urban residence, and ranging in median age from 29–32 years. Their rate of potentially serious complications was higher with second trimester procedures than with first trimester procedures (and highest with hysterotomy), and higher in India where increased artificial abortion has recently been initiated than in Singapore where the data were collected at least 2 years after the law was changed to increase the indications for abortion. Complication rates in patients with NPEMC were highest in patients less than 20 years of age, nulliparous, and more than 12 weeks' gestation. Concurrent sterilization appeared to increase the complication rate. There appeared to be no benefit to hospitalizing patients after first trimester abortion with dilatation and suction curetlage (Suction), unless complications were suspected. Abortion during the second trimester with intra‐amniotic saline and hysterotomy was not only associated with higher complication rates, but with longer operative and hospitalization times than those associated with first trimester abortions with D&C and Suction. Not only did the frequency of women using contraceptives increase, but the use of more effective methods increased after artificial abortion in India and Singapore. Patients with PEMC had different frequencies of specific patient characteristics, different management, and generally higher complication rates than patients with NPEMC. These results imply that in order to decrease the morbidity associated with artificial abortion:1)Every effort must be made to abort pregnancies in the first trimester.2)Physicians must be trained to perform artificial abortion, and not to rely on their past training in managing patients with incomplete and inevitable abortions.3)Improved abortion techniques, especially in the second trimester, and sterilization techniques concurrent to abortion must be devised tested, evaluated and impl

Dilatation of the cervix by a single extra‐amniotic dose of 25 μg of 15 (S) 15 methyl PGE2methyl ester was attempted in 425 women prior to vacuum aspiration or curettage. From June 1, 1961 to May 31, 1973, or a 12‐year period, we performed a total of 188 radical pelvic operations in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Philippine General Hospital. Radical hysterectomy was done on 142 patients, pelvic exenteration on 16, radical vulvectomy and bilateral groin and pelvic node dissection on 27, and a combined radical vulvectomy and pelvic exenteration on 3. There were 157 patients with cancer of the cervix, 26 with cancer of the vulva, 3 with cancer of the vagina, and one each with cancer of the ovary and corpus uteri. Pelvic exenteration had the highest mortality and morbidity rates, followed by radical hysterectomy. There was no mortality in the radical vulvectomy group. The long‐term survival rate (3–12 years) with radical vulvectomy was 79%, with radical hysterectomy for cancer of the cervix, stage I was 72%, for stage H‐a, was 643%, and for recurrent cervical cancer was 36.8%. In the pelvic exenteration group, the long‐term survival rate (3–12 years) was 43.7%. Those patients who underwent a combined radical vulvectomy and pelvic exenteration had the lowest survival
