AbstractIn a previous paper by the author [1], fracture surfaces of round bars under pure torsion are considered. To exclude the effects on the stress distribution of the displacements along the axis of the bar, it was assumed that the bar is made of plastic‐rigid material. This insured that the bar remained in pure torsion. In this paper a more realistic case is considered which includes the effects of the axial stress in a round bar under torsion when the two ends of the bar are confined to lie in fixed planes. Such a case will be denoted by the shorter term „fixed ends”︁, and the therm „free ends”︁ will be used when there is no such restriction. For the case of pure torsion it was shown that the bar is most likely to fracture on a helicoidal surface whose intersection with the cylindrical surface of the bar is a helix making a 45º with the generator of the cylinder. AbstractSeth's transition theory of creep, which neither requires the creep laws nor the yield criteria and the associated flow rules, has been used to derive the creep stresses in shells under uniform internal pressure when the steady state creep has been reached. It has been shown here that the creep stresses and the assumed stress‐strain rate relations are the same as those given by Bailey. It is also found that the transition points may be multiple points and may therefore be used for finding either plastic or creep stresses depending upon the transition functions. AbstractAn exact solution is presented for the steady laminar flow of a viscous, incompressible, electrically conducting liquid in a rectangular pipe between conducting plates under the influence of an imposed transverse magnetic field. The problem is of particular interest since it is one of the few in which the induced magnetic field can be matched between the liquid and the plates. Numerical results are included for the exact solution and for an asymptotic representation suitable for large Hartmann numbers.

AbstractThe flow of a general incompressible second‐order viscoelastic fluid is described by a third‐order nonlinear vectorial partial differential equation. We here discuss the theory of that equation for the case in which the fluid is flowing between two parallel plates with separation h. We show that for certain critical channell‐widths has flow which is initially a laminar shearing flow cannot remain so. In fact, for these critical values of h, if there is any flow at all the departure from shearing flow must appear instantly in the first time‐derivative of the velocity. This result, which has no analogue in the Navier‐Stokes theory, sheds light on a nonexistence theorem obtained by Coleman, Duffin, and Mizel [6] for the linear equation describing second‐order fluids in sh
