AbstractFor monotone smoothing of univariate data sets an objective function is used which represents a trade‐off between curvature minimization and interpolation. The monotonicity condition is taken into the constraints. Using quadratic splines this smoothing problem is discretized by a quadratic program, and this in turn can be dualized in such a way that an unconstrained program results. In addition, a return‐formula holds true by means of which the optimal spline is directly computed from a solution of the dual problem. Thus, from a numerical point of view this approach is attractive. Here the dualization is performed via Fenchel's theory. AbstractThis paper presents an existence and enclosure result for solutions of semilinear elliptic systems in case that the nonlinearities do not possess any monotonicity properties. Moreover, it is shown that even in this case one is able to establish a monotone iterative scheme for constructing the solution, provided that a certain matrix, which is related to the spectrum of an associated linear differential operator, is positive definite.

AbstractCalculating the periods of long standing waves in closed oblong basins is a classical problem within limnology and oceanography. Particular difficulties arise when the basin under consideration displays topographical variations, and in general it proves necessary to resort to approximative procedures for these cases. Traditionally the resulting eigenvalue problem has been resolved with collocation methods, but in the present study it is shown that a perturbation technique can be used instead.
