AbstractA Volterra‐Fréchet functional expansion is used to represent the stress‐strain relation of a general nonlinear viscoelastic material. Application is made to the investigation of the stability of a centrally loaded nonlinear viscoelastic column. AbstractIn this paper, slow steady flow of an idealized elastico‐viscous liquid through a straight tube is discussed. Perturbation technique is employed to linearize the equations of motion and state. We observe that the flow, under the influence of a constant pressure gradient down the axis of the tube, is a rectilinear flow over which a secondary flow is superposed in planes perpendicular to the length of the tube. The basic equations derived are solved with the function theoretic method. The solution for any arbitrary cross‐section of the tube is obtained. AbstractThe method of Green's function is extended to the thermoelastic Kirchhoff‐Love theory of thin shells. A reciprocity theorem and heat conduction equations appropriate to the Kirchhoff‐Love theory are used to derive integral solution formulas for middle surface displacements involving six Green's functions. The equations determining the Green's functions are deduced and compared to those for shallow shells. Both sets of equations are solved by conventional techniques for an infinite circular cylindrical shell. AbstractThe problem of heat transfer due to the steady slow motion of a Rivlin‐Ericksen fluid in the annular space between two wavy cylinders has been considered. Taking the deformation of the boundaries to be small, the equations of continuity, momentum and energy have been solved using the perturbation technique. The solution for the velocity field is employed to study the nature of the temperature distribution under two types of thermal boundary conditions. Non‐Newtonian parameters affect the velocity field, the stresses and the temperature field. AbstractEs werden die verschiedenen Möglichkeiten der Energiezufuhr auf Diskontinuitätsflächen in einer Überschallparallelströmung betrachtet. Dabei zeigt sich, daß die Energiezufuhr auf einer Front unter gleichzeitiger Ausbildung nur einer Stoßwelle nicht möglich ist, sondern daß sich zusätzlich zu der Energiefront noch mindestens zwei Stoßfronten ausbilden müssen. Für eine Anströmmachzahl M∞= 10 und eine Energiezufuhr qi/W ∞2= 0,1 werden die verschiedenen möglichen Frontwinkel sowie die Drücke und die Stromlinienwinkel hinter den Fronten berechnet.
