摘要:
From September onwards the phased introduction of teacher appraisals will begin in schools. So far, in the six areas where DES pilot schemes are being run, special schools have not been to the fore. In this article, however, the authors concentrate on issues which are relevant to special schools. They draw on a survey of 32 headteachers in special schools in the north west of England and also suggest some guidelines for an effective and fair system. Kath Williams is deputy head, Underlea Special School, Liverpool, and Ian Petrie is a lecturer in special education at Liverpool University and honorary editor of this Journal.

摘要:
Although it may not be possible for pupils with severe learning difficulties to communicate fluently with other people, they can be helped to do so to the limits of their capacity. Margaret Mackay, head of Lochgelly North School in Fife and Dr Judith Watson, Professional and Curriculum Support Studies Department, Moray House College, Edinburgh, describe a series of games which have helped to improve children's communication skills.

摘要:
Despite the growth in the development and use of communication aids and systems for those with special educational needs their use within informal situations is limited. Established interventional programmes do little to further communicative competence in those who depend upon aids beyond the selection and prescription of augmentative systems. The authors illustrate the differences between ‘aided’ and ‘normal’ communication and outline an intervention strategy which aims to modify the behaviour of both interactive partners. Mark Williams is a lecturer at Dene College, Tonbridge. Nicola Grove is a speech therapist at Mapledown Special School, Barnet. The material in this paper was developed for current Makaton Symbols courses in the UK and

摘要:
Assessment of the functional vision of visually handicapped children is currently carried out by teachers using materials which are visible because they reflect incident light. The back‐lit, light‐emitting screen of the microcomputer can present two‐dimensional images more closely matched to the ‘optimum’ than is possible through conventional means. Microcomputers have a part to play in the assessment of functional vision in the classroom. The authors, who are Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) research associates at Birmingham University's Research Centre for the Education of the Visually Handicapped (director: Dr M.J. Tobin), describe the software produced by some years' research at th
