Elastic properties of transverse isotropic rocks may be theoretically determined by subjecting a single hollow cylinder specimen to a set of two simple stress conditions. The reliability of the methodology is considered by testing both thin-walled hollow cylinders and thick-walled hollow cylinders. The results indicate that the testing procedure produces consistent material parameters, sample preparation does not seem to induce changes in the specimen behaviour, and that the assumptions implemented in the determination of the material parameters are reasonable.Key words:hollow cylinder, anisotropy, elasticity, test method.

The infiltration of a light nonaqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) into an unsaturated porous medium will result in varying amounts of water, LNAPL, and air within the soil voids. A simple and reliable method of determining the percent saturation of each fluid is needed to analyze laboratory infiltration experiments. This note reviews the available methodologies for determining the oil content in porous media and presents an experimental study of a simple and reliable method for determining water and oil contents in an unsaturated fine to medium sand.Key words:fluid saturations, oil content, gravimetric, extraction, assay.

Serious errors in assigning void ratio to a laboratory sand specimen can occur due to poor resolutions in the measurement of its physical dimensions. The extent of these errors for given resolutions in the measurements of specimen diameter and (or) height is discussed, and their implications in estimates of undrained residual strength are pointed out in the steady-state analysis of sand structures that could be susceptible to flow slides. Alternatives for a more confident and consistent assignment of void ratio are proposed that circumvent the generally low resolutions in measurements of specimen diameter and height and utilize only the high-resolution mass measurements.Key words:measurement resolution, void ratio error, sand, liquefaction, residual strength, flow slide.

摘要:
Results of tests on a rigid embedded pile with baseplate are presented. Laboratory tests were conducted with an instrumented 102 mm rigid circular pile embedded in sand and subjected to combined moment and horizontal load. Two different backfills and two different baseplates were used. The rotation of pile and the soil pressure distributions along the length of the pile and at the bottom of the baseplate were measured. It was found that the moment carrying capacity of a rigid pile can be increased between 25 and 50% by using a baseplate. The investigations reported in this paper are useful in the design of directly embedded transmission-pole foundations.Key words:baseplate, model tests, rigid pile, sand, transmission poles, ultimate moment.
