AbstractThree groups, a group of women currently suffering from an eating disorder (ED), one consisting of women who had recovered from an eating disorder (XED) and the third consisting of women who had never suffered an eating disorder (NED), were compared by means of interview. Respondents were asked to rate the extent to which they gave themselves treats and punishments. Results showed that within the NED group, dieters and non‐dieters were similar in that both tended to claim that they gave themselves treats but not punishments. Women in the ED group, irrespective of type of eating disorder suffered, tended to report treating themselves less and punishing themselves more than was the case for those who had never suffered an eating disorder. The XED group also appeared more self‐punishing than the NED group, but were ambivalent in the extent to which they considered they gave themselves treats. AbstractThe study reports the pre‐post findings from a controlled comparative evaluation of treatments for bulimia nervosa. These pre‐post results allow comparison of the hypnobehavioural and cognitive behavioural treatments with a waiting list control group and a comparison of the immediate effects of the two modalities. One hundred and thirty subjects were screened to enter the study. Seventy‐eight subjects entered the investigation after being randomly allocated to either a waiting list control group, or to hypnobehavioural or cognitive behavioural groups. The treatments were delivered individually and matched in duration (8 weeks) and the number of sessions. Pre to posttreatment outcome indicated significant differences between the control group and the two treatments in reductions in bulimic behaviours and related eating pathology. The immediate effects of both treatments were equal. There were no differences at posttreatment between the treatments in abstinence from either bingeing or purging. AbstractA dietary history was used for assessing food selection and dieting patterns at the onset of the eating disorder in a hospitalized group of anorectic and bulimic patients. It was found that anorectics and bulimics adopted different methods to achieve weight loss; anorectics lost weight by a reduction in portion size, while bulimics attempted weight loss with fad diets and leaving out meals. The time from start of anorectic behaviour until onset of binge eating among bulimics averaged 10 months, after which time the patients adopted an eating pattern consisting of intermittent starvation and binges. AbstractThis paper reports the results of a pilot study of eating attitudes and behaviours of 150 female and male students, 15‐20 years of age. Screening with the EAT‐26 revealed 6.4 per cent of the 78 girls scoring in the high‐risk range (⩾ 20 points). Of the females 14 per cent and 4.2 per cent of the males fell in the low‐risk range (10‐19 points). The additionally administered questionnaires showed significant differences between female and male adolescents but few differences between the risk and the non‐risk female group. Further steps in a larger epidemiological study are discussed to find out more details of the development of disturbed eating behaviours and their influence of turning to eat
