AbstractIt is argued that the diagnosis of different types of eating disorders lacks either scientific validity or clinical utility, and that the forthcoming elaboration of diagnostic schemes (DSM‐IV) is unlikely to improve matters. The central problem with the diagnosiscentred model of the eating disorders seems to be that it is based on an inappropriate model of clinical practice, focusing on syndromes rather than symptoms. However, it would be equally invalid to assume that there is little or no similarity across eatingdisorder sufferers, as suggested by an individual‐centred model. Our understanding of the psychopathology and treatment of the eating disorders would benefit from employing a more clinically‐appropriate model of practice—the ‘scientist practitioner’ model. Discarding specific diagnoses and using this model would help to make clinical practice and research in the eating disorders more mutually

AbstractSixty‐six psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, psychiatric social workers, physicians and public nurses, treating eating disordered adults, adolescents and children in inpatient and outpatient units in the health services in Oslo have participated in a two‐year training programme. The programme is founded on: Six full‐day conferences with multiprofessional contributions to main issues in the treatment and diagnosis of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa; organized supervisory groups meeting at a regular three‐week basis through the two years; individual supervision at need; and clinical psychiatric work with eating disordered patients. The effects of the programme are very positive, and demonstrate an increase in therapeutic activity and significant educational activity of the participants, who have become resource persons supervising other health profes

AbstractA frequent theme in the literature is the link between anorexia nervosa and other disorders, such as affective illness. In recent years, however, more specific proposals have been made suggesting that some individuals who engage in high levels of sporting activity (in particular long distance running) might themselves have a disorder which is in some ways analogous to anorexia nervosa. There is a certain innate appeal to this proposal and it would appear as if there are many descriptive similarities between patients with anorexia nervosa and individuals who exercise to excess. Excessive physical activity has long been known to be one of the features commonly found amongst those suffering from an eating disorder. In this paper we review the literature and critically explore the link between excessive exercise (EXE) and anorexia nervosa (AN). Directions for future research in this area are also pointed out.
