摘要:
AbstractThe American Psychiatric Association (APA) soon will publish a new system for the classification of psychiatric illnesses, DSM IV. It is likely to become the accepted scheme throughout the world for at least the next decade, exerting a strong influence on clinical work and research (Kendell, 1991). With admirable openness, the APA has promulgated widely the deliberations of the committees charged with designing the new classificatory system, actively seeking comments from American and overseas experts. Proposals were set out in an Options book, and a series of Draft Criteria have now been published (American Psychiatric Association, 1993) from which a fair idea can be gained of how the final version will look. There is an extensive accompanying text, sections of which have also been circulated to consultants with a special interest in the various areas of classification. Field trial results have been assessed and the proposed criteria discussed at the APA's Annual Meeting in May, with a view to publication of the final form of DSM IV early in 1994.While members of the American Association have had ample opportunity to express their views, it is important that other professional groups throughout the world also voice their opinions of the new system as they too will be affected by its implementation. The purpose of the present paper is to present a critical appraisal of the proposed criteria for eating disorders in DSM IV.

摘要:
AbstractWomen with anorexic and bulimic disorders perceive their family interaction as ‘unhealthy’. However, this pattern is common to a variety of psychological disorders. Are there more specific patterns of perceived family functioning that might be associated with the psychopathology of eating disorders? This paper describes the construction and clinical validation of a Parental Style Questionnaire, measuring perceived parental disapproval and setting of standards. Women with eating disorders generally described their parents as disapproving. Anorexics saw their mothers in particular as setting abnormally high standards, while bulimics reported abnormally low standards. It is suggested that both groups experience parental disapproval as aversive and uncontrollable, and that either pattern could maintain the poor self‐esteem that is central to eating disorders. The potential uses and limitations of the PSQ as a clinical and research measure are disc

摘要:
AbstractThe aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of pregnancy on women suffering from bulimia nervosa. Six mothers completed several rating scales and participated in a semi‐structured interview. These were used to construct a case study of the subjects with regard to their emotional experiences during pregnancy and their eating pathology during and following the pregnancy. Fears commonly experienced during the course of pregnancy included losing control of their eating and weight, causing damage to the unborn child by engaging in bulimic practices and not being able to cope with a newborn infant. With regard to eating pathology during pregnancy, subjects did not experience an amelioration in bulimic symptoms. In the puerperium there was a resurgence of bulimic symptoms for all women either at a level of severity equal to or worse than before conception. Albeit tentative, pregnancy does not seem to provide women with an opportunity for recovery from bulimia nervosa and pregnancy may, in some cases, result in an exacerbation of bulimic symptom

摘要:
AbstractA questionnaire survey was conducted among 160 boarding school matrons to investigate how many had encountered eating disorders amongst their pupils, as well as how they had managed these cases. Of the 114 usable responses, 78 (68 per cent) reported coming across a pupil with either anorexia or bulimia. Although medical care was the most frequent course of action, only 24 respondents (21 per cent) felt it had been helpful. Fifty‐one per cent of matrons who had encountered a pupil with an eating disorder felt that there was not enough help available, most calling for more information and education about eating disorders. The findings highlight the role that schools have in recognizing eating disorders at an early stage and have implications for prevention programme
