The paper discusses the objectives and structure of the Software Engineering Institute's Education Programme, with particular emphasis upon those items associated with the Graduate Curriculum Project. We discuss the development and form of the products emerging from this project and examine the ways in which these are being used both in educational establishments, and also in the other projects of the Education Programme.

Students being trained specifically as software engineers require an abstract picture of hardware operation which is not only appropriate to programming, but which allows them to appreciate the relationship between hardware, software, and system performance. There are approaches to assembly language teaching that can fulfil the former requirement, but we find that approaches to the latter normally involve more electronics understanding than is appropriate for software engineering students. We describe a course of practical work on which students can build an understanding of the relationship between hardware operation and both high- and low-level software, without knowledge of electronics. We believe that this, complemented by suitable assembly language teaching, provides the students with a useful, valid, and reasonably general picture of the relationship between hardware and software.

The evolution and current state of implementation of a thread of software engineering education which runs through an electronic engineering degree course is described. The major educational aims and objectives are provided and the pedagogic methods used are outlined. Successes and practical problems related to the running of the course are discussed with a view to helping others who may wish to run a similar course. The course is viewed as providing a worthwhile educational experience. However, its continuing development is seen as being under threat due to the resources required to run it.

Software engineering is not taught as a separate subject, but the theme runs throughout the three years of the computer science degree programme. The students start with an introduction to the software development lifecycle and project management through a small-group project in the second term of the first year, and by the end of their three years' study have gained understanding and insight into a variety of tools and methods.

The experience of using these tools with a large number of undergraduates will be presented, and an outline of the projected extension into a computer-aided learning system will be given. Industrial input led to this group project practical for Computer Science students at the University of Edinburgh. The project ties together many components of the Computer Science curriculum, and involves students who do joint degrees with other subjects, enabling them to use their speciality subject. It is argued that this form of practical enhances the education of software engineers beyond that which is normally found in programming practicals. The industrial input has been retained throughout the project, and industry continues to play a valuable role in this course. Sufficient detail is included to allow others to incorporate elements of this group project in their own courses, as many have commented to us that they would like to run such a practical. Although the group project course was designed to improve the education of our students, it is concurrent with the latest trends in computer science and software engineering education, and also seems to have anticipated professional and political criticism of education.

Computer Science graduates are often accused of having no experience of the real world problems of large software systems. In general, the practical work is said to be too small scale, and too individually oriented. This paper describes the introduction of a major group project into the degree syllabus at Heriot-Watt University. The project is designed to give the students experience of the problems involved in writing multi-author software and meeting strict deadlines. The choice of topics, supervision and management aspects are all covered. The problems of assessment are described.

We present the history behind organising and assessing group projects in software engineering at Teesside Polytechnic. We describe why our initial plan in 1987-88 was seriously deficient in the objective assessment of many of the desirable attributes of a good software engineer. We review how we overhauled our method of setting and monitoring goals to create a cost-effective structured learning environment, and how we modified the industrial audit and review procedure to become our tool for individual assessment and performance/learning feedback. Details of the goals and their assessment are given. This methodology for the conduct of Honours-level group projects is commended as good educational practice.

The majority of courses in software engineering concentrate on educating students in the methods applicable to the development stage of the software lifecycle. Software maintenance is recognised as the most expensive phase of the software lifecycle, and yet it receives very little attention from those involved in software engineering education. This paper describes a novel approach to software maintenance education which is being undertaken at the University of Durham.

The paper reports on a software engineering course given under the auspices of an academic research project to its researchers. The value of such a course is noted, as is the lack of similar courses elsewhere. In the light of recent comments from University Vice-Chancellors and Principals, as well as from Government, more academic research projects should be running courses of the kind described.
