Summary.Sperm morphology abnormalities can be identified in a large proportion of patients with failed and delayed fertilization when assessing this parameter with strict criteria. Statistical analyses of a large IVF population confirm that, in patients with severe teratozoospermia, fertilization rates can be enhanced in many cases by increasing insemination concentration. However, implantation rates are impaired, thereby affecting the ability of these patients to establish a viable pregnancy. Data from couples undergoing controlled ovarian stimulation/intrauterine insemination seem to support the use of strict morphology as a predictor of outcome in this setting, too. Although a descriptive parameter, sperm morphology assessed by strict criteria can be used as a bio‐marker of sperm dysfunction(s). These dysfunctions are multiple and include abnormalities of motion parameters, poorer capacity to bind to homologous zona pellucidae and penetrate zona‐free eggs, and low incidence of spontaneous and induced acrosome reaction. At a cellular level, poor morphology is associated with a higher content of creatine kinase and impaired capacity to undergo appropriate changes in intracellular calcium concentration. Whether nuclear/DNA abnormalities are present still remains to be fully determined. A definitively objective evaluation of morphology based on these criteria may allow all centres specializing in assisted reproduction to analyse semen in a homogeneous fash

Summary.Male human genital tract was treated for the immunohistochemical demonstration of secretory IgA in order to verify its own possible antimicrobial properties. An intensely positive immunoreaction for sIgA in the epithelial cells of prostate and urethral glands was observed; in the same organs the presence of immunoreactive cell clusters in the subepithelial layers was noted. Immunostaining in the epithelia of deferent duct, seminal vesicle, deferential ampulla, ejaculatory duct and bulbourethral glands was absent. Summary.Male golden hamster sperm acquire complete fertilizing ability at about 48 days of age. In this study hamsters, 27–130 days of age were killed and their male reproductive tracts examined. Sperm were found in the caudae epididymides from 37 days onward. None of the sperm from animals younger than 41 days were capable of fertilizing ova when placed in the uteri of superovulated females. Using flow cytometry of acridine‐orange‐stained cells, the chromatin condensation in cauda epididymal sperm was investigated. It was seen that DNA from sperm from the younger animals (under 40 days of age) was less tightly bound to protamine than that obtained from mature animals. In summary, the earliest sperm produced by pubertal hamsters were immature with regard to chromatin condensation, morphology, motility, and ability to fertilize ova, and they developed mature characteristics in the period between 40–48 days

Summary.The present study compiled the data furnished by 77 different specimens of human bulbo‐urethral secretion obtained from 4 donors. It established that Cowper's fluid, allowed to dry at room temperature, gives rise to dendritic crystalline structures showing a remarkable pattern closely resembling fern leaves. In addition to the dendrites, which may develop in some other mucoid secretions and are known to be mainly composed of NaCl crystals, numberless tiny spherulites are also observed within interdendritic intervals, in the central part of the preparations. These spherulites consist of polycrystalline micro‐structures radiating from a central nucleus. It can be inferred from their structure and localization that they are composed of salts other than NaCl and do not crystallize in the cubic system. Far from being an occasional phenomenon, ferning crystallization is considered to be an unequivocal physical constant of dried human bulbo‐urethral fluid. As for interdendritic crystalline spherulites that were described previously as occasional structures present only in ovulatory cervical mucus, both their abundance and range of size variation make them a constant and specific feature of dried Cowper's

Summary.The neuroendocrine nature of a subset of Leydig cells has already been established. The present investigation deals with neuroendocrine characteristics of Leydig tumour cells. A number of neuroendocrine and neuronal markers were demonstrated in Leydig cell tumours of 7 men aged 25–41 years. The following substances were immunocytochemically tested in Leydig tumour cells: the monoamine‐synthesizing enzymes tyrosine hydroxylase and aromatic L‐amino acid decarboxylase, the indoleamine serotonin, the calcium‐binding protein parvalbumin, the microtubule associated protein‐2, neurofilament protein 200, synaptophysin, neuron specific enolase, substance P and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Compared to the normal interstitial cells beyond the tumours, all neoplastic cells showed a significantly weaker immunoreactivity for nerve cell markers as well as for testosterone and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which is usually accumulated by nitric oxide (NO). This provides evidence for a certain dedifferentiation of Leydig tumour cells.However, these results suggest that tumourous development of Leydig cells does not include loss of neuronal phenotype.
