Analysis of cyclic neutropenia using digital band‐pass filtering techniques |

For a six month period, serial counts were obtained daily of the blood neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes of a patient with cyclic neutropenia. During the last three months eosinophil, basophil, reticulocyte, RBC and platelet counts also were made. Most of these series of blood cell counts showed marked periodicities and these periodicities bore definite phase relationships to one another. Digital bandpass filtering techniques were used to extract an almost periodic signal from the noise fluctuations in each of the observed time series. Phase relationships were determined for the several time series and compared with the results of similar determinations on grey collie dogs with cyclic neutropenia. Comparison of the human and grey collie data demonstrated that the ordering of the lags of the various cell types was the same in the two species. An estimate of the period length of the cycle in both the first half and the second half of the human data was determined using the phase shift over time. This estimate was one and half days shorter for the final three months than for the prior three months of data collection. The particular digital filtering method chosen for this analysis — complex demodulation and remodulation — is well suited for the analysis of periodicities in data where the almost periodic component is changing slowly through time in both amplitude and phase.

Aladjalova (1964) described physiological and behavioural harmonic processes which were considered with Lacey's (1958) and other random process theories. Two experiments were carried out: the first obtained evidence for harmonic characteristics in autonomie processes and the second showed that these characteristics were independent of those obtained on a signal detection task. These results were discussed with evidence for the existence of harmonic characteristics in perceptual‐motor tasks (Tainsh, 1972) in terms of slow and fast psychological control systems.

Body temperature was measured telemetrically during day and night on unrestrained Syrian hamsters. The variation in temperature was taken as an indirect measure of the locomotor activity of the animals. A significant circadian temperature rhythm characteristic for nocturnal rodents was only found when the hamsters were caged together in a group. When isolated the mean body temperature during both the light and the dark period decreased and the circadian temperature rhythm was damped. The differences in the temperature rhythm in different rodents is stressed. The attention is called to the fact that the circadian temperature rhythm can be used in estimation of the optimum conditions for the experimental animals in order to get the most homogeneous material for the experiment.

Pentobarbital anesthesia can be induced in rats entrained to a 12 hr photoperiod (09.00 ‐ 20.00 hr) most readily during the first half of the environmental light period. Rats are most resistant to anesthesia at 21.00 hr. The cyclic changes in the time required for anesthesia induction and the duration of the effect appear highly correlated.

摘要:
The energy metabolism ofChenopodium rubrumseedlings is analyzed with respect to endogenous rhythmic changes in adenine nucleotides. It is demonstrated that the pool sizes of ATP, ADP and AMP display endogenous rhythms. Following Atkinson's hypothesis of adenylate control of metabolism and determining the “energy charge”; of the seedlings, a circadian rhythm is observed which is shifted by 180° in relation to the circadian rhythm in betacyanin turnover. The energy charge concept is discussed in view of a working hypothesis which assumes that circadian rhythms evolved as an adaptation of living organisms to diurnal cycles of energy supply from the environment.

The circadian rhythm of cholesterol‐7a‐hydroxylase activity in the normal animal is under the control of the hypothalamo‐adrenal axis. In the genetically blind animal, the enzymatic rhythm observed is under the same control. However, in these animals, the rhythm is not synchronized, but can be demonstrated by the following facts: (a) there is a great variation of cholesterol‐7a‐hydroxylase activity at the two nycthemeral times which correspond to the minimum and the maximum enzymatic activities in the normal animal; (b) in the adrenalectomized animals, cholesterol‐7a‐hydroxylase activity is always low; (c) an excellent linear correlation exists between the enzymatic activity and the corticosterone plasma level. These observations indicate the existence of endogenously controlled biological rhythms.
