Rabbits that have been exposed for several weeks to a L12:D12 regimen exhibit afterwards, under constant circumstances and in steady darkness for 53 h, the presence of “programmed”; circadian rhythms in the RMS value and spectral composition of their (computer‐analysed) EEG's, in the RMS value of their electromyograms, and in skin temperature. For the occipital and frontal EEG's the RMS value attains its lowest level during a dip occurring about 3 h before the previous light on‐moment and its maximum, which is 1.5 times the minimal value, during a peak at some 3 h before the previously occurring light off‐transient. Similar changes occur in the power spectral densities of all frequencies between 0.5 cps and 40 cps, with the result that circadian changes in the spectral composition of the EEG, although present and having the same time course, are rather slight. The results are discussed in terms of the two‐oscillator model for the central circadian mechanism.

Attempts were made to compare the circadian rectal temperature rhythm between 5 blind and 5 sighted subjects. Rectal temperature was measured continuously for 24 h, at an ambient temperature of 28°C and a relative humidity of 60%, in the resting subject. The difference between the maximum and the minimum values of the rectal temperature (= range of oscillation) was 0.82 ± 0.09°C (mean ± S.E.) and 0.91 ± 0.11°C, and the 24‐h mean of rectal temperature 36.88 ± 0.22°C and 37.03 ± 0.14°C in the blind and the sighted subjects, respectively. These values between the two groups were not significantly different. The morning rise of rectal temperature began at ca. 3 a.m. in the sighted subject, but did not occur until at least 6 a.m. in the blind subject. The evening fall of rectal temperature also seemed to occur at later times in the blind subject. Our present findings suggest that the reduction of the ability to sense light and dark in the blind subject delays the phase of the rectal temperature rhythm, but it does not change the circadian pattern and the range of the oscillation in the rectal temperature rhythm. These findings are discussed from the viewpoint of circadian physiology.

Protein synthesis was investigated in a hepaticin vitrosystem containing microsomes and, besides other components, Sephadex G‐25 eluate. [3H] ‐leucine incorporation was measured in total protein as well as in a fraction of purified integral membrane proteins prepared from microsomal membranes by treatment with EDTA and 2M LiCl. Incubations were carried out combining microsomes and Sephadex G‐25 eluates from postmicrosomal supematants isolated at 8 different diurnal phases.

A circannual rhythm of testicular size existed in California ground squirrels(Spermophilus beecheyi)kept at 20°C under 3 regimes of daylength: Santa Barbara (SB), LD 12:12, and southern hemisphere (SH). Seasonal descent of testes was measured on a scale of 0–4. The squirrels on SB daylength maintained a cycle of descent of 11.13 months; those on LD 12:12 of 11.61 and those on SH daylength 10.65. The latter 2 groups showed great variation. The persistence of the rhythm under constant daylength (LD 12:12) and also on a 6‐months phase shift indicates that the rhythm is circannual.

Diurnal changes in content of cytoplasmic RNA in the supraoptic nucleus (SON) and arcuate nucleus (AN) neurons of the mouse hypothalamus induced by ACTH were analysed microspectrophotometrically. Single injections of ACTH were administered in a dose of 100 I.U./kg at the same or different times of day and night. A single dose of ACTH administered at the same or a different time caused, within the first 4 h, a decrease in the total content of cytoplasmic RNA in neurocytes of the examined hypothalamic nuclei, and subsequently, a significant increase in later hours as compared to control values. At the same time, ACTH induced a significant shift in maximum and minimum values of cytoplasmic RNA level in SON and AN neurocytes, as compared with control material.

Whether the eye of quail is a driving oscillator or not was studied by examining the locomotor activity rhythm. The circadian rhythmicity was assessed by the actogram and chi‐square periodogram. The bird showed clear diurnal rhythmicity under 24 h light‐dark (LD) condition. By bilateral enucleation, the activity during dark phase increased, and the diurnal rhythmicity became obscure in some birds when the actogram was inspected visually. The periodogram showed, however, that the significant daily rhythm was maintained in all birds examined in this condition. Thus, the brain photoreceptor could mediate LD information responsible for the locomotor activity. Under constant dim light condition, the circadian rhythmicity was found in intact quail. Unilateral enucleation has no substantial effect on these circadian rhythmicities. However, there was a disruption of circadian rhythmicity following bilateral enucleation. These observations suggest that the ocular system of quail may be classified as one of the driving oscillators, and is involved in the expression of the circadian rhythmicity of locomotor activity.
