摘要:
A group of gibbons(Hylobates lar)has been maintained in the seminatural, designed environment of Hall island, Bermuda, since 1970, demonstrating the feasability of long term, experimental studies of animals instrumented with intracerebral electrodes and a shoulder harness to carry radio stimulators and telemetric units for recording of mobility. Observations of spontaneous behavior were synchronized using 5 sec units, broadcast to experimenters in the field.

摘要:
The mesopelagic fishAstronesthes nigerconcentrates in the uppermost centimeters of the sea when both sun and moon are below the horizon. Probability of positive catches increases towards the times of lower culmination of sun and moon and perhaps is highest when both culminations are about synchronous. Positive catches were made only when the moon was near its first or third quarter, but this might be somewhat influenced by the material which was not evenly distributed in relation to moonphases. It is assumed thatA. nigerneeds moonlight for vertical migration, but avoids the surface during illumination.

Changes in the circulating plasma volume were monitored for twelve consecutive months in five white‐tailed deer(Odocoileus virginianus)maintained outdoors in a 2.4‐ha enclosure in northern New York stale. The mean annual relative plasma volume of the two male white‐tailed deer (43.6 ± 1.0 ml/kg) was not significantly different from that of three females (45.7 ± 0.7 ml/kg). Mean annual absolute plasma volume, however, was significantly higher in males (2588 ± 90.7 ml) than in females (2092 ± 79.1 ml), mainly because of the greater body weights of males in late summer and early fall. Both sexes had a marked seasonality in the level of relative and absolute plasma volume regulation. Relative plasma volumes were lowest in February‐March and highest in May‐June and again in October, while absolute plasma volumes were lowest in late winter to early spring, when body weights in the annual cycle were lowest, and volumes were highest in mid‐fall, at the annual peak of body condition. Males had a greater excursion about their annual mean relative plasma volumes (‐16 to 13%) and absolute plasma volumes (‐23 to 32%) than did females (respectively, ‐11 to 9% and ‐13 to 19%). Variations in the level of plasma volume regulated are related to the annual cycle of environmental conditions and changes in body and physiological condition of white‐tailed deer.

摘要:
Daily periodic changes of body temperature were examined in 138 subjects ranging in age between 5 days and 44 years. Whereas the circadian rhythm of human body temperature was not discerned in newborn babies, body temperatures were higher during daytime than during nighttime in infants over one month. Temperature rhythm similar to that of adults, with respect to phase, was observed in the age groups of ten to eleven months and over, earlier than previously reported. The amplitude in circadian oscillation was, however, significantly larger in children between 7 months and 7 years of age than in adults. Thus, it is concluded that the adult type of circadian rhythm of human body temperature is fully established with respect to phase and amplitude after 7 years of age.

The relationship between cardiac rate variation, resting sinus rhythm heart rate in beats per minute, and mental state is reviewed. A small series of 12 psychiatric patients in whom these variables were studied both before and after appropriate psychiatric treatment is reported. Comparison with the periodicity of cardiac rate variation in a normal group of subjects showed that the setting of the biological clock governing cardiac rate variation in psychiatric patients is abnormal, and in these cases running at a slower frequency than that of mental health. Appropriate psychiatric therapy re‐sets this clock in patients responding to treatment, but fails to do so in those patients who remain unimproved. Resting mean sinus rhythm heart rate in beats per minute does not show this relationship.

摘要:
The Swedish foil piston corer is perfect for taking long oriented sediment cores. The paleomagnetism in three Swedish varved clay cores record the annual changes during periods of about 100–150 years. An 11‐yr sunspot cyclicity is well established in the magnetic records. The amplitude variations are large. In thick varves (proximal varves and drainage varves), the inter‐annual magnetic variations are recorded. The intensity shows a clear annual cyclicity (independent of sedimentological variations). Declination and inclination show an annual cyclicity, too. The amplitudes of the sunspot and annual cyclicities are too large solely to be the effect of ionization changes. Chemical‐physical environmental changes must have played an important role in both cases. The recorded annual and seasonal magnetic (NRM) fluctuations are so large in amplitude that they in unvarved sediments without good dating control might have been classified as “excursions”; or major secular variations.
