摘要:
Humoral and immunologic activity of the thymus in the postnatal period and during sexual maturity were studied on the basis of acid phosphatase activity, which is a sensitive indicator of the activities of many endocrine glands. The aim of study was to ascertain whether acid phosphatase activity and inorganic phosphate levels show 24 ‐ hr variations during selected periods of life i.e. in the third and eighth week after birth. Desynchronization of the rhythm under the influence of X‐ray and ultraviolet radiation was also studied. The data demonstrated a distinct 24‐hr rhythm of acid phosphatase activity and inorganic phosphate levels in both groups of animals. X‐ray and ultraviolet radiation markedly desynchronized the rhythm.

The feeding pattern of rats fed the carcinogen 2‐acetylaminofluorene (AAF) ad libitum was investigated using a continuous‐recording electronic balance. Although a regular rhythm of eating was maintained, the timing of this rhythm was moved forward by 2–8 hrs. The extent of this shift increased with higher levels of dietary AAF, and with increasing time of AAF feeding. However, the degree of this change varied from rat to rat. As a result of the change in the timing of the diurnal rhythm of feeding, the rhythm of the AAF‐treated rats was no longer related to the controlled lighting conditions. There was also no relationship between the timing of the rhythm in any particular rat and the rhythms of rats in adjacent cages.

A comparison between the theoretical backgrounds of the Cosinor Test and the periodogram method suggested that in many cases the use of the periodogram method is preferable and safer (Van Cauter and Huyberechts, 1972). This work refers particularly to the analysis of multifrequential phenomena, which are commonly encountered in biology and medicine. Statistical analysis of computer‐generated time‐series and 24‐hr cortisol paterns is performed by both methods; comparison between the obtained results strongly support our previous theoretical conclusions. The periodogram method appears to be particularly well‐suited to period estimation in biological data; in some cases, simple additional compulations may improve the approximation of the period.

摘要:
Three computer programs, based on Fourier transformation, were developed to evaluate and analyze biorhythm data. The first program provides information about the general characteristics of a rhythm in terms of amplitude, phase, and other factors. The second program sums the factors causing a change in rhythm shape and gives a quantitative value to describe it. The third program measures the period length from peak to peak and from trough to trough. Relative food intake data from 24 Sprague‐Dawley rats during four consecutive days were used to verify these programs.
