Seasonal, unimodal lunar‐day oscillations in potato O2‐consumption |

O2‐consumption of sprouting potato plugs in constant conditions was monitored hourly over ten years. The data for each month was reorganized to obtain the mean rate for each hour of the lunar day. All the data revealed a very low amplitude residual lunar‐day pattern, range less than 1%, with a lesser minimum at upper transit of the moon and major maximum at lower transit. Hourly variances disclosed a significantly greater range from upper transit to lower than for the rest of the day. To discover possible inverting tendencies for the lunar cycles, the mean monthly days were divided into quarters with each quarter expressed as its deviation from the daily mean. Greater negative correlation than random (—0.333) would indicate an inverting semidiurnal cycle if found between adjacent quarters, and a diurnal if between alternate ones. A diurnal cycle was demonstrated (P<.001) using all data when the quarters included centering on upper transit but not when the quarter terminated at this time. Using the upper‐transit‐centered quarterly series an annual modulation was found, with a highly significant diurnal cycle (P<.000001) for the months September‐February and only randomness for March‐August. The results during fall and winter indicate a family of inverting diurnal lunar‐day cycles with maxima at upper transit, lower transit, moonrise, or moonset. Neither diurnal nor semidiurnal lunar cycles occurred the remainder of the year.

Experiments were undertaken to examine the role of various endocrine factors (adrenal, pancreas, and testis) on daily (24h) variations in hepatic microsomal drug metabolism.Adrenalectomy and alloxan‐induced diabetes abolished the daily variation in drug metabolism as well as producing alterations in the basal levels of hepatic microsomal enzyme activity. Castration and insulin treatment abolished only the daily variation in ethylmorphine metabolism. These data suggest that various endocrine factors influence basal levels of hepatic drug metabolism; however, daily variations in hepatic drug metabolism are apparently not causally related to similar variations in plasma hormone levels.

In this investigation male rats were kept under controlled environment with LD 12:12 cycle or under constant light condition. Fasted or non‐fasted animals from each group were injected with 25% ethanol (2 g/kg) one hour prior to sacrificing the animals. Fasted or non‐fasted animals kept under LD 12:12 showed a circadian variation in plasma, liver and kidney ethanol levels. Fasting produced a peak shift of ethanol levels in the bloodas well as the tissues studied. There was significant circadian variations in plasma ethanol level of non‐fasted animals kept under constant light. However, fasted animals kept under constant light exhibited “free running”; pattern in relation to ethanol levels. Data from this work suggest that fasting and light conditions can alter the circadian pattern of plasma ethanol levels.

Sexually mature male and femaleRana esculentaL. were captured in their natural habitat in six phases of the annual cycle. Nuclear volumes of neurocytes in the ventral lateral septum (VLS) were found to fluctuate distinctly in the course of the year. In both sexes nuclear volumes of neurocytes were maximal in the phases preceding the breeding season (3rd decade of January, and 1st decadeof April), and minimal in the phaseat the beginning of hibernation (3rd decade of October). The results lead to the assumption that the VLS ofRana esculentamay have an active role in controlling gonadotropin release.

In sexually mature male and femaleRana temporariaL. frogs of similar body length caught in their natural habitat in seven periods of their life, the nuclear volume was measured in subfornical organ (SFO) neurocytes containing lipofuscin pigment (LFP). Content of pigment was also determined. The nuclear volume in SFO neurocytes containing LFP as well as the content of pigment were found to undergo a distinct fluctuation in thecourseof the year. The largest volume of the nuclei was observed during the period immediately preceding the breeding period in males and females (1st decade of March), and the lowest volume in the middle of the period of active life (2nd decade of July). Analogous changes in the content of lipofuscin were observed in the course of the year. The problem is discussed whether lipofuscins, aside from their metabolic character, also play a part in storage and secretory function in amphibians.

摘要:
The aim of this study was to explore the individual development of the circadian rhythm of human body temperature. Dailyperiodicchanges of body temperature were examined longitudinally in four infants from 3 to 18 months of age. At the 3rd month of life, the day‐night rhythm of the body temperature was obscure but at the 6th month it became moreevident. From the 12th month on, the circadian temperature rhythm with phase similar to that of the adult was discerned. However, the amplitude in circadian rhythm was significantly larger in children between 6 and 18 months of age than in the adult. These findings suggest that the adult type of circadian rhythm of human body temperature is established during the first year of life with regard to phase but not to amplitude.

Gulf killifish were maintained in either 3‰ or 35‰ commercial sea salts on a LD 12:12 photoperiod regime and sampled by heart puncture at one of 6 different times of day. Maximum titers of circulating prolactin occurred at the same time of day (8h after light onset) in fish acclimated to either 3‰ or 35‰. Fish acclimated to 3‰ had an additional increase in serum prolactin (8h after light offset) not noted in 35‰ acclimated fish.

摘要:
A simple electronic network employing unijunction transistors has been used to obtain qualitative information regarding the entrainment behavior of relaxation oscillators coupled by low pass filters. Using arbitrary criteria, entrainment boundaries have been determined over the frequency range from 0.14 to 0.5 Hz for filters having time constants of 0.55,1.1 and 1.7 s. It is shown that the efficacy of entrainment is related to filter time constant and the Fourier structure of the bilaterally coupled signals
