In this paper, the authors examine the consequences of the non‐respect of the residuals’ independence assumption for the Cosinor method. The classical F‐test and confidence ellipse are no longer correct in this case. By adopting an autocorrelated noise model they propose a modified F‐test. Residuals are analysed by means of the maximum entropy method. At last the authors investigate the asymptotic property of the robust test.

Auroral fluctuations AD 500–1600 observed in China and in Europa show nearly the same features together with the curve of sunspots observed in China. Therefore the eventual influence of polar migration is not needed for the explanation of these fluctuations.

Destruction of neurosecretory cells in the pars intercerebralis of the brain causes the loss of locomotor activity rhythms and creates hyperactivity. When the brain is taken from a rhythmic cricket having both short‐period activity rhythm (S‐PAR) or long‐period activity rhythm (L‐PAR) and is implanted into the abdomen of such an arrhythmic recipient, it produces a characteristic locomotor activity rhythm of the host cricket.

Female rats were individually housed in a cage placed inside a small light‐proof chamber. They were allowed to switch on and off the ceiling lamp of the chamber by pressing a lever. Adult rats, raised under LD 12:12 and exhibiting regular 4‐day estrous cycles, developed persistent estrus during a 60‐day stay in this cage, where self‐selected LD alternations were quite irregular depending on animals. Female rats, born and raised under irregular LD cycles controlled by their mother and isolated in such a cage, also produced irregular LD cycles but their extrous cycles repeated regularly. Mating, pregnancy, parturition and lactation took place normally. Their locomotor activity exhibited an ultradian rhythmicity. These rats demonstrated very regular 4‐day estrous cycles and 24‐h locomotor activity rhythms, when they were transferred to the LD 12:12 environment. Female rats, either born and raised under the illumination control by their mother and by themselves or raised under LD 12:12, developed persistent estrus, if they were housed in a light‐proof chamber in which the ceiling lamp was switched on and off unpredictably by a certain rat in a remote separate cage. From these results, it is suggested that the clock mechanism involved in the regulation of the estrous cycle might function independently from the environmental LD cycles unless it is irreversibly entrained by the 24‐h LD cycles or disturbed by unpredictably irregular LD alternations. The ultradian pattern of the locomotor activity rhythm might also differentiate and become well‐organized into a circadian type after the exposure of the 24‐h environmental time cues.

Human Alveolar bone was removed in the same individual during bilateral mandibular first premolar extraction, the first one between 1000and 1230, and the second one between 2200and 0030,orvice versa.The statistical analysis (Student t‐test for matched pairs) shows : 1. the mitotic index was higher in the specimens taken between 1000and 1230, while3H‐thymidine labelled cells index as estimated in a 1‐hour organ culture, was higher in the specimens taken between 2200and 0030. 2. Alkaline phosphatase activity (a parameter of bone formation) as well asß‐glucuronidase and acid phenylphosphatase activities (parameters of bone resorption rate), were higher in the specimens taken between 2200and 0030. These findings reflect the existence of nyctohemeral fluctuations in human bone turn‐over.

Nyctohemeral variations in the number of tritiated‐thymidine labelled cells as well as in the number of mitoses of the mandibular condylar cartilage in the young rat, were submitted to a statistical analysis according to De Prins’ method. This method offers the possibility of a statistical analysis of spectral findings. 1) In the experiments reported here, rhythms observed exhibit a 24‐h period significant oscillation. Formally, the behaviour of several features of the residual errors allowed neither to proof nor to reject the existence of additional spectral components. 2) In these experimental conditions, there was no environmental factor inducing oscillating periods inferior to 24‐h; moreover, there is no data to support the existence of biological period corresponding to one of the additional harmonics. Comparisons between rhythms parameters seem unappropriate, since conclusions depend mainly on the assumptions made.

Alveolar bone removed from eleven to thirteen year‐old boys, was placed into organ culture. The analysis of the results shows that the formation rate (as estimated by45Ca uptake and alkaline phenylphosphatase activity) and the resorption rate (as estimated byß‐glucuronidase and acid phenylphosphatase activities) were both greater to a highly significant degree in the 80 cases where alveolar bone was removed between April the 1st and July the 1st than in the 80 cases taken between October the 15th and January the 15th.

An oscillation is reported to exist in an index which measures the atmospheric vorticity over most of the northern hemisphere. This oscillation has a period very close to nine days and it is more prominent during the colder part of the year. Possible relationships between the atmospheric vorticity index and the geomagnetic field are discussed.
