摘要:
Aktograph experiments show that the circadian clock ofBabycurus centrurimorphusKarsch is entrained by changes in illumination and temperature. Different rhythms can be engendered simultaneously in the same individual. The rhythm is accelerated in constant darkness.

摘要:
Effects of continuous light and dark periods and long and ultrashort photoperiods on the gonadal function of a subtropical finch, Spotted munia, hitherto considered “non‐photosensitive”, were studied. This bird seems to be unique in that while gametogenesis and hormone production are stimulated by the continuous or long scoto periods the endogenous rhythm of reproduction continues in constant 24hr or 15hr long daily photoperiod.

Drawing on work with passerine birds, investigations on the self‐selection of photoperiod in a constant environment by pumpkinseed sunfish(Lepomis gibbosus)capable of controlling their lighting have been carried out. Each aquarium with lighting equipment was set up in a separate, light‐tight compartment in a quiet, constant‐temperature room. Under one treatment, an overhead fluorescent light could be turned on and off by breaking a photobeam. Under two further treatments, breaking the photobeam turned the light on for three minutes. Fish were fed daily at a regular hour. The latter two treatments, but not the first, resulted in data containing diurnal rhythmic components as analyzed by autocorrelation techniques. The results are discussed in the context of different methods of measuring “internal clock” mechanisms.

A heterogenous group of mentally retarded children with I.Q. c. 50 and aged up to 18 years was compared with a group of similarly aged “bright normal” children. Two test procedures were carried out: the Critical Flicker Frequency threshold (CFF) and a maximal speed 15 sec Tapping test. Each test was repeated serially on a minute by minute basis. While significant differences between the groups were found in the maximal speed tapping test average scores, graphing the minute by minute serial test scores against time fore each individual revealed the emergence of a continuously changing series of scores which formed spontaneous cycles of recurrence. The rough graphed plots with their approximately best fit lines were confirmed by auto‐correlation tests, the statistical significance of which was found to be statisfactory. This finding applied equally to the CFF, its deviation about the means and to the tapping test when the combined scores for the right and left hands were considered and the deviation about their means. Periodicity of recurrence was found to be different between the retarded group and the group of normal children used as controls. The neurological implications of this finding are discussed.

摘要:
Cultured lymphocytes showed an oscillatory pattern of3H leucine incorporation into TCA precipitable material when labelled in sequential 2‐hr pulses for 26 hrs. Leukocytes obtained from successive bleeding samples in 4‐hr intervals exhibited a similar pattern of H leucine incorporation. Statistical analysis showed the oscillatory incorporation pattern to be significant and not the result of random fluctuations. The cycle length was approximately 6 hrs.
