摘要:
Our previous reports have described a brief rating scale designed to measure mood and associated variables on a daily basis. We report here methods of analysing the data obtained from using the rating scale. These methods detect statistically significant infradian rhythms and their possible relationships to certain weather variables.

摘要:
Quail entrained to 24 h light dark‐cycle exhibited a daily rhythm in the electroretinogram (ERG). The amplitude of the b‐wave was large during day and small during night. Strong light intensity (more than 10 joule) was required to detect this rhythmicity. After opticnervesection the diurnal rhythm of ERG persisted at least 2 weeks in LD 14:10. A 30‐min dark treatment produced a more pronounced difference between day and night level of the b‐wave amplitude. These characteristics of the ERG remained unchanged after exposure to constant dim light condition both in intact and optic‐nerve sectioned birds. These observations suggest that the retinal system itself may be classified as one of the self‐sustained oscillators and be likely to control the daily rhythm of the retinal response to light. The possible role of the retinal system in the photoperiodic response in quail is discussed.

Studies were conducted to examine the annual fluctuations of disease intensity in potato wart disease. Each experiment ran over many months and consisted of monthly, weekly and daily inoculations of Arran Victory potato tubers withSynchytrium endobioticumpathotype 2. Treated plants were harvested 2 months after inoculation. The experiments were conducted in the greenhouse and controlled environment growth room. A trimodal waveform (of diminishing amplitude) of percent infections was detected. The three periods of increased infection coincided with the major periods of host susceptibility. A periodicity of about 8 weeks between these infection periods was evident. This paper is part of a continuing study of pathogenesis of S.endobioticum.

摘要:
During a 4‐week balneotherapeutic cure treatment, the optical and acoustical reaction times as well as the flicker and fusion thresholds, using the flicker test, were measured in 2‐day intervals in 44 patients. For comparison 11 healthy inhabitants of this spa were examined in the same way, but without any cure treatment. Confirming earlier results, the course of all measured parameters in the cure patients exhibited a significant circaseptan periodicity, while in the control group no such periodicity was detected.

Under standard conditions we have demonstrated a highly significant diurnal rhythmicity of translation for both total proteins and integral membrane proteins (IMPs) using a cell‐free system from rat liver. IMPs were prepared from microsomes by treatment with EDTA and 2 M LiCl. Normal rhythmic protein synthesis of untreated rats reaches a maximum at 03.00 h and an intermediate maximum at 12.00 h for both total proteins and IMPs.

摘要:
There are two different patterns of feeding rhythm of the diurnal gerbil,Meriones hurrianaeduring summer and winter seasons in the Indian desert. The feeding activity is restricted to two phases (6 to 11 a.m.; 4 to 7 p.m.) in summer with an intermediate phase (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) of complete rest inside the burrow systems. In winter, feeding continues uninterrupted from 6.45 a.m. to 5.15 p.m. During summer, increase in air and or soil temprature suppresses the food intake and general activity of rodents, whereas the rise in these climatic parameters promotes feeding among gerbils during winter season. Two distinct peaks of the feeding cycle during summer (6–9 a.m.; 5–7 p.m.) as well as winter (8–10 a.m.; 3–5 p.m.) periods can be chosen as suitable timings for laying poison baits inside burrows of gerbils.

摘要:
Lithium chloride (0.047 M) lengthens the period of running wheel activity of Syrian hamsters by 0.2 h. The phase‐shifting effect of light pulses are affected by this salt: Delays are increased by 0.3 h, and advances reduced by 1.5 h. The switchover from delays to advances is delayed by 1.0 h. No effect of Li+on the phase‐shifting of light pulses was found during the subjective day.

Pregnant female rats, challenged with a single ethanol dose near the mid‐gestation period, displayed a significant circadian variation in the rates of both blood ethanol clearance and ethanol metabolism. Maximal rates occurred near the dark‐to‐light change of the LD 12:12 regimen. These rhythms may have been synchronized by pregnancy‐induced hormonal cycling since these same animals, challenged as virgins with asynchronous estrus cycling, showed no difference in ethanol metabolic rate over the 24‐h span and circadian variation in blood ethanol clearance rates of questionable significance.

The leaf movement rhythm ofGossypium hirsutumL. (cv. Lakshmi) could be entrained to 24 h LD cycles with different photofractions varying from 4 to 20 h such that the night peak position of the rhythm occurred during darkness. The phase angle (ψ) of the rhythm varied in a regular manner with different photoperiods of a 24 h LD cycle. Under 24 h LD cycles with different photoperiods, the leaf movement shows probable evidences for the concurrent participation of a ‘light‐on’ and ‘light‐off rhythm.
