摘要:
Diurnal rhythms of rat and mouse liver are reviewed. In particular, the following functions are discussed: amino acid catabolism (tyrosine aminotransferase, phenyla‐lanine hydroxylase, tryptophan oxygenase, aspartate aminotransferase, etc.), glu‐coneogenesis (phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase), glycogen metabolism, lipid metabolism, drug metabolism, several further enzymes belonging to various biochemical pathways, glutathione content, catecholamine content, nucleic acid content and synthesis, mitosis, membrane permeability, ultrastructural changes, and protein synthesis.

摘要:
Maximum locomotory activity inB. minaxtakes place in darkness when the temperature is rising. These factors entrain the circadian rhythm of the species. A bimodal rhythm, with peaks induced by alternating light and darkness and an increase in temperature during the light period, tends to persist in constant temperature and darkness until a single peak of activity every 24 hrs eventually asserts itself. The rhythm is neither accelerated nor retarded in constant darkness and therefore does not follow the circadian rule.

摘要:
A method for monitoring eclosion‐activity employing a photoelectric switch and an event‐recorder is described. Temperature‐pulses of 40 C and 4 min duration, interrupting the constant temperature of 20°C and offered during physiological darkness (red safe‐light), effectively and instantaneously shift the phase of the circadian rhythm of eclosion inDrosophila pseudoobscura.A weak type response‐curve showing varying delay‐shifts and no advance‐shift at all was obtained. In phaseshifting temperature‐pulses act instantaneously. The conclusion is based on data from two types of experiments. (a) Experiments employing phase‐response studies and (b) Experiments inducing arrythmicity with “singularity‐point”; treatment.

Circulating prolactin hormone levels demonstrate a marked circadian rhythm in tapwater‐ and 30% seawater‐acclimatedCarassius auratusL. The levels of prolactin were essentially similar in fish in both ambient media except at 12.00 hr when the levels in tapwater fish were significantly (p<0.01) lower than in tapwater‐ and seawater‐acclimated animals at any other time period. The implications of the prolactin hormone levels are discussed in relation to the involvement of prolactin in freshwater osmo(iono)regulation in this species. There was no significant circadian rhythm in the content of acid phosphatase in the prolactin‐secreting cells.

摘要:
The oscillation in each of 17 locomotor variables of 8 different active goldfish is studied by time series analyses. The fish had been monitored singly for over 15 hrs on different dates over a 2‐yr period and under controlled conditions of temperature, light, water quality, and flow. The derived autoregressive models reject the “random”; hypothesis of independent observations over time. Instead, the correlo‐grams oscillate smoothly and regions of positive and of negative partial serial correlation are apparent. Prediction of future behavior of the series is greatly enhanced by the models, and distinct patterns in their coefficients are evident for individual fish over all variables and individual variables over all fish. Angle size relationships are the most rigid oscillators. Mean step length is the most pliant variable and hence is the most likely parameter to be modulated by the control mechanism or mechanisms of orientation. The authors surmise that the 17 variables, with their varying periodicity, strength, and frequency of oscillation, have a complex multivariate interrelationship which establishes the constraints within which locomotor behavior is bounded. The above analytical approach seems to lend itself to the construction of a cybernetic model of hierarchal control of locomotion in fish.

After measuring a variable during some finite time interval T, we want to determine the possible regular cycle variations. To do this, we give the summary of a method described earlier. This method consists in determining a set of successive discrete Fourier Transforms. This allows us to study first the phase coherence between the different terms that have been obtained, secondly the mean values.

Statistical aspects of different types of autorhythmometry are discussed; the long records of equispaced automated recording versus sporadic, unequidistant and skew self‐measurements during a few cycles. Multiple regression is seen as a main tool for fitting of trends and sine curves simultaneously. Possible errors in this procedure are explored, including the difference between the representation of data as vector components or as phase‐amplitude pairs.

摘要:
It has generally been assumed that the Late Quaternary short‐term climatic fluctuations have followed cycles of a constant frequency. This paper reports a quite new finding; the frequency of the cycles changes drastically. Three cycles are identified; one of 230–1000 yrs (A), one of 1000–3600 yrs (B) and one of 21,000 yrs(C).
