摘要:
Male hedgehogs were maintained in outdoor parks, under natural climatic conditions. The general locomotor activity was recorded over one year in five hedgehogs, using an infra‐red producer‐receptor system registering entering or leaving the nest box in relation to time. Simultaneously, thecortico‐adrenal activity was studied monthly by sampling without disturbing, at 4 h intervals over a period of 24 h, in groups of 6 animals with a catheter inserted in the left carotid artery. The corticosteroids were assayed using a competitive protein binding technique.

Cyclical economic indicators are often suspect because there is no easy explanation for their apparent regularity in period and phase. Previous studies, however, have shown that they do have predictive value (Alcock, 1977; Alcock, 1978; Alcock and Quittner, 1978). A five‐cycle model of global energy consumption per capita, based on 1921 ‐38 and 1949–66 data for the 12 largest rich nations, has been given a limited test by meansof detrendedeconomicdata for one of the 12 nations for the 1968–79 period. Forty five percent of the variance of the detrended economic indicator was accounted for by the five‐cycle predictive model. A predictive Table and Figure for rate of change of global energy consumption per capita for the 1979–88 decade is included with the analysis.

摘要:
The tracking of frequency changes in rhythmic data is approached in this paper using an algorithm named Covariance Prediction‐Error Filter (CPEF). It is related to auto‐regressive spectral analysis in thatitobtainscoefficients for an ARM which fits the data being analysed. Matrixrelationshipsaresetupvia forwards and backwards scanning of the data and the required coefficients are found via solution of these matrix equations. Results using simulated sinusoids and a range of biomedical rhythms are presented. These indicate the superiority of CPEF over Fourier Transform, Yule‐Walker and Maximum Entropy methods for analysing short stretches of rhythmic signals. Improvements in frequency spectral shape, peak accuracy andcomponentdiscrimina‐tion have been obtained and hence CPEF can be suitable for instantaneous rate measurement of noisy signals.

Daily changes of a number of nuclear functions of rat liver were analysed in rats kept in a light‐dark (LD 12 : 12) cycle and constant temperature. Measurements of the DNA content of rat liver with diphenylamin revealed a mean value of about 3 mg/g liver freshweight without showing significant daily rhy thmicity. When related to mg DNA, no significant rhythmicity could be observed in the total protein content and only a slight rhythmicity in the nuclear protein content. Injection of cycloheximide(2mg/100gbody weight) 10 h before killing the animals resulted in an about 10–20% decrease of the protein content of the tissue as well as of the nucleus and probably in a loss of cell water. Nuclear proteins were separated into nuclear sap proteins, chromatin proteins and restproteins, the first 2 fractions of which were further fractionated by means of polyacrylamide SDS electrophoresis. Considerable differences in the protein content of some of the bands were observed: some bands appeared only at a certain time of day (at 6 h), other bands showed a high amplitude rhythmicity with a maximum at 18 h, whereas other bands— as for example the histone containing bands— varied only slightly during 24 h.
