The paper seeks to establish a suitable oven drying standard for whole maize ears. The temperature/time combination of 130°C for 38 hours recommended for unmilled maize kernels (ISO 6540 end BS 4317) was taken as the starting point. The temperature was not varied, but the effects of time and shelling on the maize ear and its components were investigated. It was found that the oven drying rate for maize ears was very similar to that of the kernels, due to the small fraction of moisture in the cob and its rapid diffusion. ISO 6540 and BS 4317 standards for unmilled maize kernels are therefore also recommended for whole maize ears.

A comparison of the drying efficacy of ambient-air drying of large forage bales was made between positive and negative pressure systems. Both systems effectively dried the bales to the desired average moisture content, but regions of higher moisture content within the bales were measured with the two systems. Energy consumption as expressed as the ratio of the energy consumed/weight of moisture removed was similar for both drying systems. Final configuration of the drying system will depend on whether heat is required to speed the drying process in order to meet the capacity of the harvesting system.

摘要:
Rice bran was treated in a batch fluidized bed at temperatures starting from 90°C up to 130°C in steps of 10°C for different treatment periods. Drying characteristics of rice bran so obtained were used in a mathematical model to predict the maximum possible storage period of rice bran treated under fluidizing conditions. It was observed that the fluidized bed treatment of rice bran requires much lower treatment times for stabilization of rice bran compared with packed bed processes and therefore could be very attractive in commercial applications.
